About The Role

Job Summary
The MEP Maintenance Technician performs general maintenance, inspection, repair, and operational support for the University’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and utility systems. This position assists skilled trades employees with maintaining HVAC equipment, electrical systems, plumbing systems, water and sewer infrastructure, steam and hot-water systems, and other campus utility equipment.
The employee performs routine and preventive maintenance, responds to service requests, assists with emergency repairs, transports materials and equipment, maintains mechanical and utility spaces, and helps ensure that campus facilities remain safe, reliable, and operational. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in mechanical rooms, utility tunnels, rooftops, confined areas, and other campus locations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance and mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and utility systems.
  • Ability to safely use common hand tools, portable power tools, ladders, meters, pumps, drain-cleaning equipment, and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to recognize leaks, damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, abnormal noises, odors, vibration, and other indications of equipment failure.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to read basic equipment labels, work orders, preventive-maintenance instructions, diagrams, and safety information.
  • Ability to record readings, materials, labor, and completed work accurately.
  • Ability to use a computer, tablet, or mobile device to access and update work orders.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees from multiple skilled-trade areas.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and professionally with campus customers.
  • Ability to work independently on routine assignments and request assistance when needed.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during utility outages, leaks, flooding, equipment failures, and other emergencies.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, including personal protective equipment, lockout/tagout, fall protection, confined-space awareness, and hazard communication.
  • Ability to operate University vehicles and transport tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to work in mechanical rooms, utility tunnels, rooftops, crawl spaces, and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and common maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience performing general maintenance, construction, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, utility, industrial, or related physical work

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience in commercial, institutional, industrial, or campus facilities maintenance
  • Experience assisting HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or utility trades
  • Experience with water, sewer, steam, chilled-water, heating-water, or stormwater systems
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management or work-order system
  • Familiarity with preventive-maintenance programs
  • OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour training
  • Forklift, aerial-lift, confined-space, or excavation-safety training
  • Basic understanding of building automation or energy-management systems
