ROLE PROFILE GENERAL Date December 2025 Location Aggeneys, Northern Cape Operations BMC Shared Services Job Grade Paterson D4 / Vedanta M4 ROLE CONTEXT Mining presents significant occupational health risks (noise, silica/dust, diesel particulate, vibration, heat/cold, chemicals, ergonomics, communicable diseases, fatigue). Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) requires a legally appointed Occupational Medical Practitioner (OMP) to ensure effective medical surveillance, clinical governance, and statutory compliance across operations. The 13.1 OMP (D4) is the clinical and statutory custodian for occupational health, leading medical surveillance systems, advising on fitness to work, guiding exposure control programmes with Occupational Hygiene, managing case investigations and COID reporting, and promoting employee health & wellness aligned to Zero Harm . PURPOSE OF THE ROLE To provide statutory occupational medical leadership and clinical governance for VZI operations by: · Implementing and overseeing a compliant medical surveillance system · Determining medical fitness to work and restrictions · Managing occupational disease/injury case finding, treatment coordination and COID processes · Advising management on health risks and controls, based on exposure profiles · Ensuring audit ready occupational health records, reports and legal submissions · Driving integrated wellness, resilience and return to work programmes RESPONSIBILITIES 1 Statutory Appointment & Clinical Governance · Serve as the site/operations 13.1 Occupational Medical Practitioner ; uphold all legal obligations. · Establish and maintain clinical governance for occupational health services (protocols, SOPs, QA/clinical audits, medicines management). · Ensure the occupational health clinic(s) meet professional standards (equipment, competence, scope of practice, infection prevention & control). 2 Medical Surveillance & Fitness to Work · Design and run the medical surveillance programme: baseline, periodic, transfer, special, and exit medicals aligned to exposure profiles. · Interpret clinical and exposure data to issue fitness to work outcomes (fit/fit with restrictions/not fit) and communicate restrictions to line management confidentially. · Lead targeted screening for noise induced hearing loss, pneumoconiosis/silicosis, COPD/asthma, DPM exposure effects, HAVS/WBV, heat stress, ergonomics, and chemicals. 3. Condition Monitoring & Predictive Maintenance · Implement or enhance condition monitoring for mining assets (oil analysis, vibration, thermography, ultrasound, fluid sampling, wear monitoring). · Integrate condition monitoring data into digital dashboards and reliability reporting. · Provide early warning insights to maintenance teams to prevent catastrophic failures. · Collaborate with Control & Instrumentation, Digital, and OEM specialists. 4. Technical Support & Troubleshooting · Support site engineers during breakdown investigations and complex troubleshooting. · Conduct technical failure analysis and field inspections. · Recommend engineering modifications, upgrades or design improvements. 5. Data Analysis, Reporting & Reliability Metrics · Maintain performance dashboards for mining equipment reliability. · Analyse equipment health indicators and identify deterioration patterns. · Report on fleet reliability performance to the Head of Asset Optimisation & Reliability. · Ensure reliability KPIs are accurate, standardised and audit ready. 6. Governance, Standards & Assurance · Ensure mining equipment meets VZI engineering-critical controls and compliance requirements. · Conduct technical audits on maintenance execution, assetcare standards and fleet management. · Support development and rollout of group engineering and reliability standards. · Ensure documentation, procedures and registers meet governance expectations. 7. Business Partner & OEM Performance Management ( Replacing “contractor” as per VZI standard. ) · Work with OEMs/business partners to improve support performance and fleet reliability. · Validate technical outputs, service quality and conformance to reliability requirements. · Participate in performance reviews and escalate technical risks. 8. People Development & Capability Building · Mentor site reliability engineers, maintenance foremen and planners. · Provide training on reliability tools, analysis methods and asset care best practices. · Support creation of a mining reliability community of practice across sites. 9. Safety, Health & Compliance Ensure reliability activities align with MHSA, VZI Zero Harm and engineering COPs. Conduct VFLs, field walkdowns, PTOs and risk assessments (IBRA/HIRA). Support investigations into equipment failures related to safety incidents. Promote safe maintenance practices, lockout, and energy isolation compliance. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS Qualifications · BEng / BTech / Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Reliability Engineering. · Asset management certification (CMRP, CRE, PMP, IAM, SAAMA) advantageous. · Valid driver’s licence and medical fitness. Experience · 6–10 years engineering or reliability experience in mining, mobile equipment fleets or heavy industry. · Strong background in reliability engineering tools and methodologies. · Experience working with SAP PM or similar CMMS systems. · Exposure to condition monitoring and predictive maintenance technologies. Technical Competence · Reliability tools: RCA, FMEA, RCM, Weibull analysis, failure mode investigation. · Strong understanding of mining equipment mechanics, systems and components. · Data analytics and KPI interpretation skills. · Ability to diagnose chronic failures, systemic defects and operational inefficiencies. · Knowledge of maintenance planning and asset care practices.
