About The Role

Austin Peay State University Department of Theatre and Dance seeks a qualified Musical Theatre candidate to begin July 30, 2027. The full-time faculty position will be tenure-track at the level of Assistant Professor. This position is specifically seeking a candidate with a strong foundation in voice pedagogy and vocal development. The ideal candidate will be passionate about growing and preparing student voices for the rigorous demands of Musical Theatre both as a competitive professional field and as a serious performing art. Our goal is for graduates of our program to be fully equipped (vocally, technically, and artistically) to enter any industry upon graduation.

The Theatre and Dance program at Austin Peay State University offers a BFA with concentrations in Acting, Design, Musical Theatre, and Stage Management, and a BA with concentrations in Theatre and Dance. Minors in Theatre and Dance are popular choices for many students. An intimate proscenium theatre seating just under 200 currently houses 4-5 productions each academic year, with a Laboratory Theatre space available for additional productions, student performances, and events. Theatre and Dance are integral parts of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts (www.apsu.edu/creativearts). A long established, state-funded initiative, APSU’s Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, is designed to enhance the cultural environment of the university, community, and region through a diverse range of imaginative arts experiences.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to

Teach Theatre/Musical Theatre related courses which includes Private Voice Lessons, Musical Theatre History, Musical Theatre Workshop, Voice for the Actor, Diction, Musical Theory, and may include Dance for Musical Theatre, Introduction to Theatre or other related courses as assigned based on Department needs/candidate expertise;
Serve as Musical Director or Director for Musicals during the production season
Demonstrate a willingness and an ability to work effectively with colleagues to support

the mission of the institution and the department;

Advise and mentor students effectively and efficiently throughout their time in the

program and help majors persist toward graduation; and

Serve effectively on Departmental and University committees and other appropriate

functions that assist in University governance; and

Show a commitment to continued recruiting efforts as the program continues to grow.

Physical Requirements

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Required Minimal Qualifications

The ideal candidate will meet the following

A terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Theatre, Musical Theatre, or a related discipline; or a terminal master's degree in a related field combined with significant professional experience in Musical Theatre at a level commensurate with terminal degree expectations.
A minimum of two (2) years teaching experience in higher education is preferred but not mandatory.
Evidence of potential ability in academic assignment and/or scholarly and creative

achievement, and/or professional contributions and activities.

Evidence of good character, mature attitude, and professional integrity.
Evidence of a respect for and an ability to work with a diverse student body
A background check will be required of the successful candidate.
