Staff Platform Engineer
Commonwealth Bank of Australia · Sydney CBD Area, Australia
About The Role
Staff Platform Engineer - Identity Services
Join our dynamic team in a senior technical leadership role
Do the work that matters
CommBank invests in the latest AI technology stack across our ecosystems, giving our engineers modern tooling, platforms, and AI-enabled workflows to build with. You will work in an environment where AI-assisted engineering is part of how we design, deliver, and support software at scale.
See yourself in the team
We are seeking an experienced engineer to join Identity Services as a Staff Platform Engineer. You will set the technical direction for our platform ecosystem and guide a team delivering reliable, secure, and cost-effective end-user computing solutions.
Deep CI/CD and pipeline expertise is central to the role, alongside strong design judgement, a focus on automation and operational excellence, and the ability to lift the engineers around you. A working understanding of Active Directory and Microsoft Entra will set you up for success.
This is a full-time position. Flexible working conditions and hybrid working environments are available.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Shape the roadmap and strategy for your team's products and services, and mentor engineers while staying hands-on in the codebase.
- Engineering Standards: Champion engineering principles, design patterns, and delivery quality across the domain.
- Pipelines and Automation: Design, build, and improve CI/CD pipelines and automation that make secure, repeatable delivery the default.
- AI-Enabled Delivery: Apply AI tooling thoughtfully across coding, testing, and support, and help others adopt it well.
- Delivery and Architecture: Build platform services and support tools that deliver measurable business value, and lead the transition to target architectures.
- Innovation and Enablement: Identify emerging technologies aligned to the Group's strategic direction, and promote knowledge sharing, documentation, and reusability.
Technical Skills
- Deep, hands-on experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automation tooling (e.g. GitHub, GitHub Actions), with secure delivery practices built in.
- Full lifecycle platform engineering — design, build, run — with a strong grasp of testing and operational readiness.
- Strong scripting or development experience (PowerShell, .NET, Bash, Python).
- Working knowledge of identity services, including Active Directory and Microsoft Entra.
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible), AWS services, containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), and observability tooling (Grafana, Prometheus).
Leadership Competencies
- Influencing and Persuading: Build alignment and shift technical direction through evidence and relationships rather than formal authority.
- Coaching and Development: Provide effective feedback and mentoring to raise engineering capability, including beyond your own team.
- Collaboration: Work effectively across functions, teams, and geographies to deliver shared outcomes.
- Flexibility and Adaptability: Manage competing priorities and treat complex production challenges as opportunities to learn.
- Risk Management: Integrate risk management and secure engineering principles into decision-making, including the responsible use of AI tooling.
