Join ALS Environmental – Part Time | Fixed Term | Hastings, NZ

ALS Environmental is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Sample Receipt / Laboratory Technician to join our laboratory team in Hastings. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for science, strong organisational skills, and a commitment to quality and accuracy.

Working as part of a supportive laboratory team, you will play a key role in receiving, processing, and preparing environmental samples for testing while ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and accreditation requirements.

About the Role

As a Sample Receipt / Laboratory Technician, you will

• Receive, inspect, and register environmental samples including water, wastewater, and soil.
• Verify sample integrity, temperature, holding times, and documentation requirements.
• Liaise with clients and laboratory staff regarding sample enquiries or discrepancies.
• Label, track, and manage samples throughout the laboratory workflow.
• Prepare samples for microbiological analysis following standard operating procedures.
• Perform routine laboratory techniques and assist with quality control activities.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and support compliance with quality standards.
• Contribute to a safe, clean, and organised laboratory environment.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have

• Secondary school qualifications with science subjects, or relevant laboratory experience.
• A basic understanding of microbiology laboratory practices.
• Strong computer and data entry skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational abilities.
• The ability to manage multiple tasks and work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
• A commitment to health, safety, and quality standards.

Desirable Skills & Experience

• Tertiary qualifications in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline.
• Previous experience in an environmental or food microbiology laboratory.
• Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
• Knowledge of ISO 17025 accreditation requirements.
