The Tax Manager works within the CtM Finance team, focusing on the VAT reporting and compliance obligations of the UK group. The role delivers accurate, timely preparation and review of the Group's VAT returns, including partial exemption calculations and adjustments, VAT accounting, reconciliations and forecasting, and ensures the Group meets its Making Tax Digital requirements. It also provides tax advisory support across the business, particularly on the VAT treatment of new products, contracts and transactions. In addition, the role supports the Group's UK Corporation Tax compliance, including return preparation and review, tax accounting, reconciliations and forecasting and the Group's R&D claims. The Tax Manager also contributes to the Group's tax risk and controls framework and to an open, transparent relationship with HMRC.
Some of the great things you’ll be doing
- Prepare and review the Group's UK VAT returns, including partial exemption calculations and adjustments, using the Group's tax technology and Making Tax Digital (MTD) processes.
- Review tax-sensitive arrangements and provide tax advisory support across the group, particularly on the VAT treatment of new products, contracts and transactions.
- Contribute to the Group's wider tax compliance obligations, working alongside the tax team on the preparation and review of the Group's UK Corporation Tax returns and claims (incl. RDEC), and other returns including PSA, Country-by-Country reporting and Stamp Duty.
- Complete month-end and year-end tax accounting, forecasting and monthly reconciliations of VAT, Corporation Tax and RDEC balance-sheet and control accounts.
- Analyse tax-sensitive management information and produce tax papers, technical notes and HMRC disclosures.
- Maintain tax process notes, risk registers and control evidence; support SAO certification, KRI reporting, First Line of Defence (FLOD) reviews and the Corporate Criminal Offence (CCO) framework.
- Manage the year-end tax audit and liaison with external auditors and advisors.
- Maintain an open, transparent relationship with HMRC — handling queries and business updates and supporting enquiries and disputes.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and case law, assess the impact and opportunity for the Group, and support tax submissions.
- Champion the use of AI, automation and data tools across the tax function — improving speed, accuracy and control of tax processes in line with CtM's strategic priority to deliver faster through AI, with appropriate human oversight of AI-assisted output.
- Support the Tax Graduate's development, offering coaching and technical guidance where appropriate.
What we’d like to see from you
- Professional tax qualification (CTA, CIOT) with post-qualification experience in an in-house tax function or large accounting firm.
- Strong technical grounding in VAT, with the ability to provide practical VAT advice and explain complex issues clearly to non-specialists at all levels.
- Experience of corporation tax compliance, tax accounting/reconciliations and tax risk & controls.
- Confidence adopting AI, automation and data-analytics tools, with an understanding of appropriate governance.
- Strong indirect tax experience, including VAT, R&D (RDEC) claims, PESM, and HMRC enquiries.
- Knowledge of employment taxes (PSA, PAYE, NIC, ERS).
- Self-sufficient with the ability to mentor and develop junior team members.
