Assistant Professor - Psychological Science and Counseling - PsyD Program

The Department of Psychological Science and Counseling at Austin Peay State University (APSU) seeks to fill two tenure-track faculty positions in Counseling Psychology with a start date of July 30, 2027. This position will serve our American Psychological Association (APA) accredited PsyD program in Counseling Psychology. The program offers a generalist track as well as a concentration in Serving Military Personnel, Veterans, and their Families. The persons hired for this position will have a unique opportunity to help shape an innovative, forward-looking doctoral training program in health service psychology. Strong candidates will have a deep commitment to the foundational values that characterize the field of counseling psychology: a holistic, contextual, strengths-based approach to intervention; an emphasis on integrating science and practice; and a steadfast commitment to culturally responsive practice and social justice.

A d octorate ( Psy D or PhD) in Counseling Psy chology (preferred) or Clinical Psy chology (acceptable) from an APA-accredited program is required. Preferred candidates will be licensed as a psy chologist HSP or be license-eligible in TN within 1 year of hire. Support is available for postdoctoral hours accrual. Clinical, teaching, and research areas are open, but interest and expertise in health psychology, consultation, ethics, geropsychology, cognitive and intellectual assessment, counseling children and adolescents, and/or counseling couples and families, as well as interest and/or experience working with military populations is d esirable but not required. All APSU faculty are expected to be engaged in university and community service, and scholarly activities. Faculty in the PsyD program also provide clinical supervision and consultation to doctoral students engaged in clinical work.

The d epartment is housed within the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, which affords rich opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations. Some examples of recent and ongoing college collaborations include a grant-funded research and intervention project aimed at supporting student-veteran transitions to college, a grant-funded project focused on student mental health and wellness, a juvenile justice mentorship project, and a working group focused on trauma-informed pedagogy.

Primary D uties and Responsibilities

• Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with colleagues to support the mission of the institution and related academic units.
• Carry a minimum teaching load of 30 credits per academic year, including 6 credits for advisement, research, committee work, and related faculty responsibilities, with the potential for summer teaching assignments (with additional compensation) as the program operates year-round.
• Teach at times and places necessary to meet student needs.
• Provide clinical supervision and consultation to students at the departmental clinic and outside practicum sites.
• Employ innovative teaching methods and instructional delivery approaches, as appropriate.
• Possess the knowledge, talents and skills in the d iscipline to promote effective teaching.
• D emonstrate respect for the varied learning needs of students.
• D evelop and implement curriculum objectives and content for assigned courses.
• D emand and maintain high standards and expectations for all students.
• Implement a variety of evidence-based teaching strategies, instructional techniques, and educational technologies.
• Provide guidance and support for students’ dissertation research and scholarly projects.
• D evelop and implement evaluation and assessment methods for each course.
• Use multiple measures to assess student learning on a regular basis and provide frequent feedback to students relative to their performance.
• Provide effective academic advising and demonstrate proficiency in supporting students' academic and professional development.
• Conduct appropriate research and scholarly/creative activity within the d iscipline.
• Effectively utilize the materials and resources of the Felix G. Woodward Library in teaching, scholarship, and service.
• Demonstrate ongoing professional growth through active participation in professional organizations, continuing education, and community engagement.
• Maintain current disciplinary expertise through engagement with scholarly literature and participation in conferences, workshops, seminars, and university-sponsored professional development activities.
• Serve effectively on departmental, college, and university committees and contribute to shared governance.

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Earned PhD or Psy D from an accredited institution in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology. ABD considered if conferred before July 30, 2027.
• D ocumented evidence of ability in academic assignments and/or scholarly and creative achievement, and/or professional contributions and activities.
