Position Summary
The Certified Nurse Midwife provides care in an advanced practice nursing role under approved protocols and within the scope authorized by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing and the American Midwifery Certification Board. The CNM manages nurse midwifery care of women throughout the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods, provides gynecologic and primary care services for women across their lifespan, and delivers care to newborns.
Essential Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Practice
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including physical examinations and medical histories
- Develop and manage individualized plans of care
- Provide prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, gynecologic, and well-woman care
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic testing
- Perform procedures within scope of practice and demonstrated competency
- Manage the care of newborns and women throughout the lifespan
Collaboration & Care Coordination
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure high-quality patient care
- Consult appropriately when patient needs exceed scope or require additional expertise
- Serve as a key resource and liaison for patients, families, and clinical staff
Patient Education & Advocacy
- Counsel patients and families regarding healthcare needs, treatment plans, and wellness strategies
- Promote health maintenance, disease prevention, and informed decision-making
- Ensure continuity of care across all stages of treatment
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain complete, timely, and accurate medical records
- Adhere to organizational, regulatory, and professional practice standards
Qualifications
Education
- Successful completion of an accredited Nurse Midwifery Program
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of full-scope midwifery practice
Licenses & Certifications
Required
- Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) – American Midwifery Certification Board
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Louisiana State Board of Nursing
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association
Preferred/Required Upon Hire
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
