About The Role

This position is hybrid and will require 3 days on site at one of the following Quest sites: Secaucus, NJ or Schaumburg, IL. Remote: This position can be 100% remote if not located near a hub within certain criteria.

Pay Range: $120,000-150,000, plus yearly bonus.

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

The Solution Architect proactively leads, designs, and governs scalable, secure end-to-end technical architectures, bridging complex business requirements with modern execution to align with our digital transformation goals.

In this role, you possess overall responsibility for the architecture and design of solutions that encompass multiple enterprise, cloud-native, and strategic applications across diverse departments.

You will drive critical platform evolution by designing secure integrations, orchestrating high-volume transactional databases, and engineering modern enterprise integrations across Quest’s highly connected, hybrid-cloud diagnostic ecosystem.

Additionally, you will leverage specialized high-volume transactional databases like InterSystems IRIS/Cache to manage real-time specimen and clinical data.

The Solutions Architect is responsible for the following

Interpret Business Needs

  • Translates business and technical requirements into an architectural blueprint to achieve business objectives and documents all solution architecture design and analysis work.
  • Work closely with the product owners and managers to ensure a robust architectural runway supporting future business requirements throughout the product life cycle.
  • Understands business drivers and capabilities (future and current state) and determines corresponding enterprise solution designs and change requirements to drive the organization's targeted business outcomes.
  • Example deliverables: Requirements traceability document, business process/capability impact assessment, business process diagrams.

Assess Technology

  • Monitor the current-state solution portfolio to identify deficiencies through the aging of the technologies used by the application or misalignment with business requirements.
  • Monitor micro- and macroscopic trends in Enterprise Architecture and global currents, including economic, political, social/cultural, environmental, regulatory/legal, and/or technological disruptions for effective decision-making.
  • Support product managers in end-of-life product decisions to maintain, refresh, or retire services or systems, including applications, technologies, processes, and information.
  • Understand emerging technology trends and disruptions and their practical application to enable new and evolving business and operating models.
  • Analyze the technology industry, competitors, and market trends, and determines their potential implications for a given solution.
  • Analyze the business-IT environment to detect critical deficiencies, legacy, and technical debt, and recommends improvement solutions.
  • Facilitate the evaluation, selection, and TCO of software product standards and services and the design of standard and custom software configurations.
  • Consult with application and infrastructure development projects and products to fit systems or infrastructure to architecture and identify when it is necessary to modify designs to accommodate the solutions architecture.
  • Example deliverables: Current state architecture documentation, vendor assessment for RFP, contribution to cost/benefit analysis, contributions to proof-of-concept implementation

Apply Technology

  • Lead evaluation, design, and analysis for implementing solution architecture across specific business applications or technologies based on enterprise business strategy, business capabilities, value streams, business requirements, and enterprise standards.
  • Manage and develop the architecture for a broader scope of projects or products, working closely with application architects who manage and design architecture for a single project product or initiative.
  • Develop a roadmap for the evolution of the enterprise solution portfolio from current to future state, as defined by the solutions architecture.
  • Act as a consultant on a broad range of technologies, platforms, and vendor offerings to drive targeted business outcomes.
  • Create architectural designs to guide and contextualize solution development across products, services, projects, and systems, including applications, technologies, processes, and information.
  • Work closely with the program management office (PMO) or project management office to ensure the execution of plans corresponds with what is being promised throughout the project or product life cycle.
  • Provide consulting support to application architects within agile teams to ensure the project or product is aligned with the overall enterprise architecture.
  • Example deliverables: Solution documentation, solution architecture designs, enterprise target state architecture, application/platform strategy

Provide Enterprise Guidance

  • Provide deliverables like standard definitions, reference models, and architecture designs to support architectural governance to assess the impact of new and ongoing technology investment on the business and IT estate (note: The level of detail and complexity in deliverables would vary depending on a solution architect’s level of responsibility in the organization chart)
  • Support a community of practice (CoP), guiding and helping agile teams' product owners align with the overall enterprise architecture governance and assurance.
  • Design and direct the governance activities to ensure solutions architecture assurance and compliance.
  • Define the principles, guidelines, standards, and patterns to ensure solution decisions align with the enterprise's future-state architecture vision.
  • Example deliverables : Solution scorecard, enterprise reference architecture components
  • 10+ years as serving architect in healthcare and diagnostics industry

Database & Platform Specialty

  • Direct experience with InterSystems IRIS / Cache is highly desired for managing specialized, high-volume transactional clinical databases.

Instrument Interfacing & Middleware

  • Technical understanding of device-level communication protocols (such as ASTM standards and HL7 LIS interfaces) and instrument manager middleware (e.g., Data Innovations) to coordinate bidirectional data transfers between analyzers and backend systems
  • Knowledge of various backend development languages like Java, Spring Boot, Python, and .Net
  • Proficiency in various database technologies like MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, SQL/No-SQL databases
  • Proficiency in API management and integration technologies like MuleSoft, IBM MQ
  • Skilled in various frontend web development languages like JavaScript, HTML and CSS, Angular, React
  • Sound working knowledge of Public Cloud Platforms (Azure & GCP)
  • Hands-on expertise with cloud-native architecture, containerization (Kubernetes), and distributed data frameworks (Databricks, Snowflake).
  • Demonstrated experience leading global architectural review boards (ARBs) and establishing formal architecture governance.
  • Architecture Governance: TOGAF, Zachman, Reference Architectures, Enterprise Roadmaps.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, Hybrid Cloud, High-Performance Computing (HPC).
  • Integration & Design: API-first design, Event-Driven Architectures, microservices, LIMS, ELN, EHR/EMR integrations.
  • AI & Analytics: AI/ML Platform Architecture, MLOps, Data Governance, Lineage, Metadata management.

Domain Expertise (Diagnostic Information Services)

  • Diagnostic Information Services & Lab Operations: Strong, practical understanding of clinical laboratory workflows, specimen/sample processing, and the end-to-end diagnostic testing lifecycle.
  • Clinical Interoperability: Hands-on experience architecting connectivity between clinical systems and major external EHR/EMR platforms (e.g., Cerner, Athenahealth) to facilitate seamless, secure orders and results delivery.
  • Healthcare Industry Standards: Experience with healthcare data messaging standards, specifically HL7 (v2 and v3) and FHIR profiles.
  • Laboratory Automation & Instrument Systems: Familiarity with Laboratory Automation Systems, specimen processing automation, physical/digital automated tracks, and the integration of high-volume clinical diagnostic analyzers with central Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
  • Epic Systems Integration (Strong Plus): Direct experience designing integrations with Epic Systems (specifically modules such as Epic Beaker LIS, Epic Care Everywhere, or Epic Bridges) is strong plus.

Education

  • Bachelors or Masters in computer science & engineering or relevant work experience

Preferred Technical Training or Professional Licensing

  • Enterprise Architecture: TOGAF, Zachman certification, or equivalent. Cloud Platforms: Professional/Expert level certifications in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Containerization & Data: Kubernetes Certifications (CKA/CKAD), Databricks/Snowflake Certifications.
  • AI/ML & Specialized: Certifications in Data Science, AI/ML, and Generative AI from a reputable institute.

Travel

  • Domestic: Occasional (15% - 20% for key corporate, scientific, or governance meetings)
  • International: Occasional (as required for global engineering alignment)
