About The Role
DescriptionPosition Overview
The Surgical Services RN provides comprehensive nursing care throughout the preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative/recovery phases of care. This role supports the operating room, PACU, same-day surgery, and specialty clinic functions while working closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative, adaptable nurse who can thrive in a small rural hospital environment and is committed to patient safety, quality improvement, and excellent patient and family experiences.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care to surgical patients.
- Assess patients, administer treatments and medications, provide education, and assist with discharge planning and follow-up.
- Support patients throughout preoperative, intraoperative, and recovery phases of care.
- Promote patient safety, infection prevention, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.
- Protect patient privacy, rights, and confidential health information.
- Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, physicians, and other departments.
- Supervise and support assigned patient care technicians and other team members.
- Monitor surgical activities and anticipate patient care needs during routine and emergency situations.
- Respond quickly and appropriately to changing patient conditions.
- Assist with transfers to higher levels of care when necessary.
- Help maintain appropriate inventory of surgical supplies and medications in coordination with central supply and pharmacy.
- Monitor supply and service utilization while supporting responsible departmental resource management.
- Ensure appropriate documentation, charge capture, and electronic health record use.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, committees, training, meetings, and professional development activities.
- Assist with staff scheduling and respond to unexpected staffing needs to maintain safe patient care.
- Participate in staff competency evaluations and annual requirements as applicable.
- Address patient concerns and escalate significant issues or risks through the appropriate chain of command.
- Complete occurrence reports in accordance with risk management policies.
- Monitor patient satisfaction and identify opportunities to improve the patient experience.
- Follow hospital policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory standards.
- Maintain professional licensure and competency in accordance with applicable Michigan requirements.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership and assist other departments when needed.
QualificationsQualifications & Skills
- Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Michigan.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively and lead by example.
- Ability to adapt to the unique needs and challenges of a rural hospital setting.
- Strong understanding of surgical services, patient flow, and perioperative care.
- Ability to effectively communicate with anesthesia providers, physicians, and multidisciplinary team members.
- Commitment to evidence-based nursing practice and continuous quality improvement.
- Ability to identify opportunities to improve processes and streamline patient care.
- Knowledge of quality improvement and research methodologies.
- Proficiency with electronic health records and clinical documentation.
- Ability to prioritize resources based on patient needs and changing surgical schedules.
- Commitment to maintaining professional competency through continuing education and training.
