HGV Truck Mechanic

Location: On-site (waste management / recycling facility)

Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00; Saturday on call

(Overtime or call-out may be required)

Job Purpose

To service, maintain, and repair company trucks to ensure they are safe, roadworthy, and fully compliant with legal and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out routine servicing, inspections, and maintenance on company trucks
• Diagnose mechanical faults and complete repairs efficiently
• Work on engines, brakes, suspension, steering, gearboxes, and hydraulics
• Prepare vehicles for MOT, inspections, and compliance checks
• Respond to breakdowns and minimize vehicle downtime
• Complete job cards, service records, and defect reports
• Ensure all vehicles meet road safety and legal standards
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workshop
• Follow company health & safety procedures at all times

Health & Safety

• Adhere strictly to health and safety policies and safe systems of work
• Use PPE and approved tools correctly
• Report defects, hazards, and incidents immediately
• Ensure vehicles are safe before returning them to service

Skills & Experience

Essential

• Proven experience as a truck / HGV mechanic
• Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills
• Good knowledge of HGV mechanical systems
• Ability to work independently and manage workload
• Strong health & safety awareness

Desirable

• HGV mechanic qualifications (NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent)
• Experience in the waste or logistics industry
• HGV Class C / C+E license
