About The Role
Position Summary The Pain Management Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for supporting providers in the delivery of high-quality patient care in a fast-paced pain management clinic. This role includes patient rooming, clinical documentation, assisting with procedures, medication coordination (including controlled substances), and ensuring compliance with regulatory and clinic-specific protocols. Key Responsibilities Patient Care & Rooming Prepare patients for examination by obtaining vital signs, pain scores, and medical history updates Accurately document chief complaints, history of present illness (HPI), and medication lists in the EMR Ensure all required screenings (MIPS, pain assessments, etc.) are completed Assist providers during patient exams Clinical Support Set up and assist with in-office procedures (e.g., trigger point injections) Maintain clean, stocked, and organized exam rooms Perform point-of-care testing as directed (e.g., urine drug screens) as needed Follow proper infection control and safety protocols Medication & Compliance Review and update medication lists, including controlled substances Assist with prescription workflows per provider direction Support compliance protocols such as urine drug screening (UDS) and pill counts Document accurately to meet state and federal regulations Documentation & EMR (eClinicalWorks or similar) Complete accurate and timely charting during patient visits Ensure all documentation supports billing and compliance requirements Upload and manage patient records, labs, and external documents Flag abnormal findings and communicate with providers appropriately Care Coordination Assist with referrals, imaging orders, and prior authorizations as needed Communicate with patients regarding follow-ups, procedures, and instructions Coordinate with lab, front desk, and billing teams to ensure smooth workflow Administrative Support Answer clinical phone calls and patient portal messages Schedule follow-up appointments as needed Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA Qualifications Education & Certification High School Diploma or equivalent required Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent preferred Experience Minimum 1 year of medical assistant experience preferred Pain management, orthopedics, or primary care experience strongly preferred Experience with EMR systems (e.g., eClinicalWorks) Skills & Competencies Strong understanding of medical terminology and clinical workflows Knowledge of pain management treatments and procedures preferred Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism Excellent communication and patient service skills Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment Work Environment Fast-paced outpatient clinical setting Frequent standing, walking, and patient interaction Exposure to clinical procedures and bodily fluids Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods Ability to lift up to 25 pounds Manual dexterity for clinical tasks Additional Expectations Adhere to all clinic policies, compliance standards, and safety regulations Maintain professionalism and teamwork at all times Participate in ongoing training and performance improvement initiatives
