An exciting opportunity exists for a Social Media Coordinator to join the Mukuru team in Cape Town. This is a role for someone with real social media experience and even better energy: a natural communicator with a genuine passion for videography and content creation, who lives on social, spots trends before they peak, and knows how to turn great ideas into content that people want to watch and share.
The main purpose of this role is to coordinate and support the day-to-day running of Mukuru’s social media platforms, from content planning, copywriting and video content creation through to design briefing, stakeholder coordination and reporting, while bringing fresh, innovative, trend-led thinking that grows our reach and engagement.
The Social Media Coordinator reports directly to the Social Media and Content Manager, supporting the execution of multiple social media pages across our markets. Internal liaison takes place with Marketing, Design, Compliance, Legal and country teams. External liaison takes place with creators, partners and audiences through social media content.
Duties and Responsibilities (Includes but is not limited to)
Coordinate and support the execution of the social media content calendar across all Mukuru platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn and YouTube), ensuring content goes live on time, on brand and error free
Copywrite social media posts in line with Mukuru brand guidelines and tone of voice, adapting copy natively for each platform
Actively monitor social and cultural trends, trending sounds, formats and conversations, and move quickly to develop timely, brand-safe reactive content that positions Mukuru at the centre of the moment
Generate and pitch creative ideas designed to drive shareability, virality and organic reach, including interactive formats, challenges and community-led content
Shoot and edit short-form video content (TikToks, Reels, YouTube Shorts and behind-the-scenes moments), bringing a genuine passion for videography and a sharp eye for what performs on each platform
Create static and video content using Canva, CapCut and similar tools, ready for publishing or for handover to the design team for finishing
Demonstrate strong working knowledge of all social channels, their algorithms, native formats and best practice, and advise the team on what works where
Bring strong planning discipline to the content calendar: plan content ahead of key dates, campaigns and cultural moments so the team is always prepared, never reactive by accident
Apply a deep understanding of our audiences and their behaviour across African markets and diaspora corridors (Zimbabwe, South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Lesotho and the UK), tailoring content, tone and cultural references so every post feels local and authentic
Write clear, complete design briefs for the creative team, including creative direction, on-creative copy, captions and formats, and manage the briefing-to-delivery process
Apply strong project management across campaigns and always-on content: manage timelines, trackers, approval flows and asset organisation so that nothing slips
Manage internal stakeholders across marketing, compliance, legal and country teams, routing content through the correct sign-off chains and keeping everyone informed
Use AI tools responsibly to support ideation, copy drafts, creative concepts and production efficiency, in line with Mukuru guidelines
Use Sprout Social (or similar social media management tools) for publishing, scheduling, social listening and reporting
Support the tracking and reporting of social media performance (reach, engagement, follower growth, video views), pulling data and insights for weekly and monthly reports
Assist with the planning and execution of digital competitions, from mechanics and copy through sign-off and winner management
Support influencer and partnership content coordination, including content collection, scheduling and performance tracking
Collaborate with the wider Marketing team to integrate social media into broader campaigns and product launches
Keep abreast of new platform features, emerging tools and developments in the remittance and fintech space, sharing learnings with the team
Key Requirements
Grade 12 or equivalent (essential)
Degree, diploma or certificate in Marketing, Digital Marketing, Communications or a related field
Minimum 2 to 3 years of hands-on social media or digital marketing experience (in-house or agency)
Proven experience managing brand social media pages across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and LinkedIn
Strong awareness of African audiences and their online behaviour, particularly markets such as Zimbabwe, South Africa and the wider diaspora, with the ability to create content that lands authentically in each
Hands-on videography skills: confident shooting content on phone or camera and editing in CapCut or similar, with a portfolio or examples of video content created
Confident working in Canva for static and video content creation
Working knowledge of social media management tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Later
Familiarity with AI tools for content ideation and production (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, CapCut AI features)
Basic understanding of social media reporting and key metrics
Fintech or financial services exposure is advantageous but not essential
