Lawton Area Transit System is hiring a full-time Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Maintenance Technician to join our Maintenance Department.

We are looking for a dependable, motivated mechanic who takes pride in keeping vehicles safe, reliable, and ready for service. This position is ideal for someone with hands-on mechanical experience in

diesel vehicles, buses, fleet maintenance, automotive repair, heavy trucks, light trucks, paratransit vehicles, or heavy-duty equipment

As a Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Maintenance Technician, you will work under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Lead Mechanic to inspect, service, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of vehicles and equipment used in daily public transportation operations.

Key Responsibilities

The Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Maintenance Technician will assist with the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fleet vehicles and maintenance equipment. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Perform routine vehicle inspections and document deficiencies

Complete oil changes, filter replacement, and lube services on light automotive vehicles, light trucks, paratransit buses, and heavy buses

Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and replace belts, hoses, suspension components, lighting components, electrical components, brake components, wheel bearings, and other vehicle systems

Perform minor tune-ups, including testing and replacement of ignition components

Disassemble, inspect, replace parts, and reassemble vehicle components with or without direct supervision

Troubleshoot mechanical issues using manuals, procedures, diagnostic information, and hands-on inspection

Test drive vehicles to evaluate performance, identify problems, and verify repairs

Remove, inspect, pack, and replace wheel bearings

Assist with brake system repairs and component replacement under supervision

Remove, remount, repair, and replace tires and heavy truck tire/wheel assemblies

Install accessories and equipment needed for specific vehicle operations

Perform road calls as needed to help keep route buses in service

Maintain shop equipment, tools, and maintenance-related equipment

Operate high-pressure washers, steam cleaners, and other shop equipment

Assist with bus stop sign removal, replacement, and other maintenance-related tasks

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance, Lead Mechanic, or management team

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 year of mechanical knowledge or hands-on repair experience preferred
  • Diesel mechanic, fleet mechanic, bus mechanic, heavy truck, automotive, or equipment repair experience preferred
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair basic mechanical, electrical, brake, suspension, tire, and lighting issues
  • Ability to safely use shop tools, power tools, diagnostic tools, and maintenance equipment
  • Ability to read service manuals and follow repair procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety
  • Dependable attendance and strong work ethic
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team
  • Willingness to learn and grow in fleet and diesel maintenance
