OCTG Shop Supervisor
NOV · Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
About The Role
- Shop-floor leadership – visible on the line, sets the pace and holds the team to standard.
- Results and urgency – owns output, delivery and cost; acts on losses the same shift.
- Data-driven – measures before improving; uses OEE and loss data to decide priorities.
- Quality mindset – will stop the line rather than ship a doubtful connection.
- Coaching – develops machinists and builds multi-skill cover across machines and grades.
- Collaboration – works constructively with the Machine Shop Manager, inspection, QA, HSE, planning, procurement, sales, customers, suppliers and licensors.
- Integrity – complies with company policy, NOV Code of Conduct and UAE regulations.
Production planning and order execution
Review customer purchase orders and work orders for connection type, size, weight, grade, drawing revision and special requirements before release.
Coordinate with the production planner to effectively plan and sequence the line daily and weekly to group connection types, sizes and grades, minimising changeovers and protecting delivery dates.
Load work to machines and keep every CNC manned and running across shifts; manage shift rosters, handovers and staff movement.
Track customer orders through machining, inspection, surface treatment, make-up and dispatch; escalate risks to delivery early.
Cross-shop coordination, sales and material supply
Work with the Machine Shop Manager to plan shared capacity across both shops – machines, people, tooling and gauges – so resources are used where they add most output.
Balance loading between the shops, share skilled machinists and equipment during peaks, and avoid idle capacity or duplicated setups.
Act as the technical point of contact for the sales team on connection, grade and specification questions; review enquiries for manufacturability, lead time and special requirements before quotation.
Support sales in clarifying technical specifications with customers – drawings, licensor requirements, surface treatment, inspection and documentation – and resolve deviations before order acceptance.
Coordinate with stores, procurement and raw material suppliers on bar stock, coupling stock and pipe availability, grade, dimensions and lead times.
Confirm incoming and free-issue material against the order specification and mill certificates before cutting; flag shortfalls or non-compliant material early and agree alternatives with sales and the customer.
CNC performance, productivity and OEE
Act as the line's technical lead on the installed CNC threading lathes: setups, offsets, tooling, programme proving and troubleshooting.
Establish and report OEE (availability × performance × quality) per machine and shift; drive it up from the current baseline to agreed targets.
Cut setup and changeover times (SMED); standardise setup sheets and tool kits per connection and size.
Optimise cycle times and cutting parameters with the machinists and programmers without compromising thread quality.
Run daily production boards and short-interval shift reviews; act on downtime, speed losses and rework causes the same day.
Lead structured problem solving (5 Whys, root cause, Kaizen) on recurring losses and contribute to the site operational excellence programme.
Quality
Implement the company Quality Management System.
Support QA/QC on non-conforming product; raise and close non-conformances in the company QAR system with root cause and corrective action.
Drive right-first-time threading: reduce re-cuts, scrap and customer returns.
People and leadership
Lead, coach and discipline machinists, operators and gauge inspectors; build multi-skilling across machines, connection types and grades.
Plan and deliver on-the-job training and licensor-required qualifications for direct reports.
Communicate clearly with customers, management, the inspection team and other NOV divisions.
Cost, reporting and assets
Control labour hours, overtime, tooling and consumables cost per connection; report revenue and output against plan.
Purchase consumables, inserts, gauges and materials within approved authority.
Capture metrics in the site reporting system (SharePoint / JDE) and present at monthly and quarterly reviews.
Ensure preventive maintenance of CNC machines, phosphating/plating equipment, bucking unit, jib cranes and compressors to protect availability.
Diploma in Mechanical or Production Engineering, or technical trade qualification with equivalent experience.
7+ years in OCTG threading, including 3+ years supervising a premium connection threading line.
