About The Role

Greywright is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to help build out and improve on the structures, mounts, and enclosures that carry equipment aboard small autonomous vessels. You will design systems that survive slamming, vibration, and saltwater, and prove them out with FEA and testing.

You will work closely with our senior mechanical engineer, naval architect, and electrical team, owning new designs and modifications through build and sea trials.

What you'll do

  • Design mechanical systems for carriage on small vessels, including equipment mounts, foundations, racks, enclosures, and payload integration.
  • Perform FEA for structural, shock, vibration, and slamming loads, and use the results to size and refine designs.
  • Design for the marine environment: corrosion resistance, sealing and waterproofing, and material selection.
  • Develop isolation and mounting approaches that protect sensitive electronics from shock and vibration.
  • Create 3D CAD models, drawings, and tolerance stack-ups, and release designs for fabrication.
  • Work with machine shops, fabricators, and suppliers to build and install parts.
  • Support environmental testing and sea trials, and correlate test data with analysis.
  • Document designs, analyses, and test results.

What you bring

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Marine, or Ocean Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience, including designing systems carried on small vessels.
  • Hands-on FEA experience for structural, shock, and vibration problems (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, or SolidWorks Simulation).
  • Understanding of the loads small craft experience at sea, including slamming and wave impact.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, NX, or Creo) and GD&T.
  • Knowledge of marine materials and corrosion, including stainless steels, aluminum, and composites.
  • Hands-on attitude and comfort working on boats and in the shop.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time when needed.
  • This role requires access to ITAR/EAR-controlled data; U.S. person status is required as defined by 22 CFR 120.62.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with shock and vibration standards (e.g., MIL-STD-810, MIL-S-901, MIL-STD-167).
  • Experience with shock isolators and vibration mounts.
  • Experience with composite structures or bonded joints.
  • Background with uncrewed or autonomous vessels.
  • Eligibility to obtain a U.S. Secret or higher security clearance; an active clearance is not required.
  • Experience with fabrication methods such as welding, machining, and composite layup.
  • Meaningful early-stage equity.
  • Great health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Unlimited vacation.
