Backend Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Engineer based in Switzerland.
As a Backend Engineer, you will join a small, highly autonomous engineering team focused on developing innovative product initiatives and scalable backend solutions. You will design and build high-performance services that power a global analytics platform used by thousands of publishers. Working primarily with Node.js and TypeScript, you will contribute to backend architecture, API development, and data-intensive systems. You will collaborate closely with product, data, and frontend teams to transform complex requirements into reliable, efficient solutions. AI-powered coding tools will be an integral part of your development workflow, offering opportunities to explore new ways of building software. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys technical ownership, solving challenging problems, and working in a diverse, international environment.

Accountabilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and applications using Node.js and TypeScript.

Build and optimize APIs supporting analytics products, working with both real-time and historical datasets.

Work with large-scale data systems and relational and non-relational databases, including MySQL, MongoDB, and ClickHouse.

Ensure backend services meet high standards of performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

Contribute to architectural decisions and technical design for new product features and services.

Develop efficient data models and optimize queries, latency, and system performance.

Collaborate closely with product managers, data specialists, and frontend engineers to deliver effective product solutions.

Work within an Agile development environment, participating in short, focused development cycles.

Integrate AI-powered development tools into everyday workflows to improve productivity, code quality, and engineering efficiency.

Contribute to testing strategies, deployment processes, and continuous integration and delivery practices.

Navigate existing codebases when necessary while maintaining a primary focus on building new services and product capabilities.

Requirements:

At least 5 years of professional experience developing and maintaining backend services in production environments.

Strong proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript, with a solid understanding of modern backend development practices.

Hands-on experience with relational and non-relational databases, such as MySQL, MongoDB, ClickHouse, or comparable columnar database technologies.

Strong knowledge of API design, data modeling, and web architecture.

A performance-oriented mindset, with a good understanding of query optimization, latency management, scalability, and efficient data processing.

Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar solutions as an integral part of the development workflow.

Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and cloud deployment practices, including tools such as Docker, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins.

Experience with unit, integration, and end-to-end testing methodologies.

Strong problem-solving skills, technical curiosity, and the ability to take ownership of complex engineering challenges.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Professional proficiency in both Spanish and English.

Additional experience that would be considered an advantage:

Experience working with ClickHouse or other OLAP and columnar database technologies.

Familiarity with real-time data pipelines, streaming technologies, Kafka, or event ingestion APIs.

Experience building and maintaining data-intensive backend services at scale.

Knowledge of middleware architectures, including API gateways, request pipelines, and data transformation services.

Familiarity with PHP and/or Java/Spring.

Experience integrating AI tools into development workflows through agents, MCP servers, or team-wide AI-assisted engineering practices.

Contributions to open-source projects or active involvement in developer communities.
