Job Summary
The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic I–II to join the Wastewater Collection Division within the Water & Sewer Department. This position performs progressively skilled maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and operational support for equipment and infrastructure associated with the City’s wastewater collection system and sanitary sewer lift stations.
Responsibilities include preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, grinders, blowers, compressors, generators, mechanical and electrical controls, safety equipment, lift stations, and related wastewater collection infrastructure. Employees use hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, SCADA, and computerized maintenance management systems to inspect equipment, identify problems, document work, and maintain reliable system operations.
Work is performed in industrial and field environments that may include confined spaces, electrical equipment and switchgear, excavations and trenches, fall hazards, rotating equipment, wastewater exposure, and heavy equipment. Employees must follow established safety procedures, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and participate in required safety training.
The Maintenance Mechanic I–II classification provides a structured career progression based on experience, wastewater collection certification, technical knowledge, demonstrated competency, and the ability to independently perform increasingly complex maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities.
Essential Functions
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative and may not include all duties assigned:
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on wastewater collection and lift station equipment and infrastructure.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair pumps, motors, valves, grinders, blowers, compressors, generators, mechanical components, and associated controls.
- Read and interpret Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manuals, mechanical and electrical drawings, construction plans, as-built drawings, and equipment documentation.
- Use hand tools, power tools, multimeters, diagnostic equipment, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned maintenance and repair activities.
- Operate and monitor SCADA and remote monitoring systems within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
- Respond to equipment failures, alarms, lift station issues, and other wastewater collection system maintenance needs.
- Perform confined space entry work in accordance with established training, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Follow applicable electrical, confined space, excavation, trench, fall protection, equipment operation, and other workplace safety requirements.
- Complete work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, equipment logs, and related documentation using CityWorks or other computerized maintenance management systems.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and assist with maintaining adequate supplies of critical spare parts, pumps, tools, equipment, and materials.
- Maintain tools, vehicles, equipment, facilities, and work areas in a safe, clean, and serviceable condition.
- Perform general facility and grounds maintenance at lift stations, including mowing, vegetation and tree trimming, minor fence repair, housekeeping, and related activities.
- Assist with the development, review, and implementation of standard operating procedures and maintenance procedures as assigned.
- Communicate equipment conditions, maintenance needs, safety concerns, and operational issues to supervisors and appropriate staff.
- Work collaboratively with coworkers, plant operators, contractors, supervisors, and other City employees to complete assigned work.
- Participate in departmental safety meetings, required training, and continuing education necessary to maintain required certifications and competencies.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hours emergencies within the established response time.
- May provide technical assistance or work direction to other employees when assigned; this position does not include formal supervisory authority.
- Perform housekeeping and other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
All Levels
- Valid Colorado driver’s license required at hire.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required within one year of hire; current Class A CDL preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic mechanical and electrical skills and familiarity with hand tools and equipment maintenance.
- Familiarity with electrical safety techniques, electrical diagrams, and multimeters.
- Ability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to respond on-site within 45 minutes for after-hours emergencies.
Maintenance Mechanic I
- Six months to two years of experience maintaining equipment for a small water system, wastewater collection system, centrifugal or submersible pumps, or a similar field.
- Basic knowledge of construction plans, as-built drawings, and GIS mapping.
- Basic knowledge of confined space entry safety processes.
- Basic knowledge of small electrical crane operations.
- Ability to learn SCADA and remote monitoring systems.
- State of Colorado Wastewater Collection I certification, or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire.
Maintenance Mechanic II
- Two or more years of experience operating and maintaining lift stations or working in a similar field.
- One year of experience with SCADA and asset management-related systems.
- Demonstrated experience using hand tools, power tools, and multimeters.
- Demonstrated knowledge of troubleshooting and repairing motors, pumps, valves, pressure reducing valves (PRVs), bearings, seals, packing, belts, grinders, blowers, compressors, generators, and associated controls.
- Moderate knowledge of construction plans, as-built drawings, and GIS mapping.
- State of Colorado Wastewater Collection II certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Maintenance experience involving the repair and upkeep of rotating equipment used in wastewater collection or similar industrial processes, including pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, generators, and grinders.
- Current Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
- Two-year certificate from a trade or technical school in industrial maintenance, mechanical systems, electrical systems, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of relevant education, experience, certifications, and licenses.
- Colorado Wastewater Collection System Operator certification at or above the level required for the position.
- Confined space entry and trench safety certification.
- Experience working with wastewater lift stations and sanitary sewer collection infrastructure.
- Experience using SCADA and computerized maintenance management systems, such as CityWorks.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of mechanical equipment and components, including pumps, motors, valves, bearings, seals, packing, belts, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance practices and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment and identify appropriate corrective actions.
- Knowledge of safe work practices in industrial environments involving electrical systems up to 480 volts, rotating equipment, confined spaces, excavations, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to safely and effectively use hand tools, power tools, multimeters, diagnostic equipment, and other equipment required to perform assigned work.
- Ability to read and interpret O&M manuals, construction plans, as-built drawings, and mechanical and electrical drawings and diagrams.
- Basic understanding of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), input/output (I/O), SCADA, and related control systems.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office, computerized maintenance management systems such as CityWorks, and learn new software and systems.
- Ability to accurately complete work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, equipment logs, and related documentation.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, adapt to changing operational needs, and work independently within assigned responsibilities.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative, reliability, sound judgment, effective problem-solving, and a positive, team-oriented approach.
Travel
Regular Local/Field-Based Travel: This position requires regular travel within the County and nearby cities. Employees frequently travel to field sites, client locations, or other City buildings as part of their job duties. Access to a personal or City fleet vehicle may be required.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily outdoors throughout the City’s wastewater collection system, including sanitary sewer mains, manholes, lift stations, easements, roadways, rights-of-way, and construction sites, with occasional indoor work at maintenance facilities.
- Work is performed in wastewater collection facilities, sanitary sewer lift stations, industrial environments, and outdoor field locations.
- Work may be performed in confined spaces, excavations, trenches, and areas with fall hazards.
- Exposure to wastewater, sewage, biological hazards, chemicals, unpleasant odors, dust, fumes, noise, and other conditions associated with wastewater collection operations.
- Work is performed around moving and rotating equipment, electrical equipment and systems up to 480 volts, heavy equipment, vehicles, and construction activities.
- Work may be performed on uneven, wet, slippery, or unstable surfaces.
- Work is performed in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind.
- Personal protective equipment is required based on the work being performed.
- May work independently or with limited supervision in remote or isolated lift station locations.
- Required to participate in a rotating on-call schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and respond on-site within 45 minutes for after-hours emergencies.
Physical Requirements
- Mobility: Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and work in confined or restricted spaces. Ability to safely navigate uneven, wet, slippery, and unstable surfaces and climb ladders and stairs.
- Endurance: Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical work for extended periods, including work outdoors and in varying or extreme weather conditions.
- Strength: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, equipment, parts, and materials associated with wastewater collection maintenance and repair activities. Ability to maintain balance and coordination while working.
- Dexterity: Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, controls, and other maintenance equipment requiring fine and gross motor skills and repetitive hand and arm movements.
- Vision and Hearing: Ability to read gauges, instruments, equipment labels, manuals, diagrams, work orders, and electronic displays; visually inspect equipment and work areas for defects and hazards; and hear alarms, equipment operation, verbal instructions, warning signals, and other sounds necessary to safely perform work in an industrial environment.
- Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and others in person, by radio, telephone, and other communication devices.
