CLOSING DATE: 27 SEPTEMBER 2026 POSITION TITLE: SENIOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR REPORT LINE: TECHNOLOGY MANAGER: SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR DIVISION: TECHNOLOGY (TV Media) SCALE CODE: 402 (Peromnes 9, Paterson C3) POSITION ID: 60020277 PURPOSE: The position requires support of the SABC Post Production and News Room systems in order to ensure that the facilities and equipment are in peak condition and thereby ensuring high on air quality and operational broadcasts 24/7. This entails corrective, preventative maintenance, planning and installation, trouble shooting, repair of equipment, systems and operational support. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Perform, plan and control the efficient preventative and corrective maintenance and repair of technical equipment to provide optimal functionality, whilst ensuring adherence to manufacturing specifications. Provide efficient and effective assistance and support for production operations during productions and Broadcast. Configure servers/ computers, networks & broadcast equipment. Conduct ongoing assessment of broadcast system functionality through logs & system checks. Supporting broadcast networks Hardware and software. Perform mechanical repairs and modifications. Involvement in projects on a technical level. Draft OPEX motivation to ensure maintenance and systems sustainability Draft Minor CAPEX motivation ensuring facilities sustainability. Perform quarterly Asset verification in areas of responsibilities. Administration / Technical documentation including the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) BUSINESS OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY On time delivery, within scope and within specifications Compliance with vendor software licenses & updated record of applications Technical inputs & specifications to support procurement of correct equipment/ software Compliance of upgrades & maintenance with vendor specifications Virus free, functional, streamlined and reliable workstations Matching of software/hardware applications to support compatibility Effective technical advice & support to internal/external users in order to reduce downtime Ad hoc operational support and assistance Ability to take steps to ensure full systems integration to prevent on air faults Ability to provide inputs for periodic review of Disaster Recovery Plan for facilities Ability to ensure critical availability of key spares/ equipment/ consumables and maintenance of appropriate stock levels Ability to submit accurate management information relating to system utilization Ability to visualize technical faults and provide effective remote solutions to customers Ability to assist with infrastructure installation for special events, e.g. elections Ability to retrieve FTP video material in accordance with laid down procedures Ability to ensure that TV, radio, web, and mobile journalists and producers are equipped with facilities that enable them to create, view, edit stories, rundowns and on-air playouts GOVERNANCE, RISK AND COMPLIANCE Fault reports in order to ensure department facilities & equipment functional & shortfalls adequately addressed Adherence to OHS Act & Company policies & procedures Full compliance with agreed planned & preventative maintenance schedule Maintain hardware and software inventories (Fixed Assets) Setup user access and security STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT AND CHANGE MANAGEMENT Clients served in efficient, friendly and helpful manner Close working relationship with clients, in order to ensure optimal delivery on production and client needs. Maintain close working relationships with internal and external service providers and vendors, in order to ensure optimal delivery on needs and requirements. LEADERSHIP AND PEOPLE MANAGEMENT Technical training in accordance with SABC best practice guide Design and install technical facilities/ equipment/ integration, ensuring adherence to technical specifications and optimal delivery on client’s needs and requirements. Develop, monitor and assess the external environment, new equipment, technologies and technology trends, in order to enhance the efficiencies and effectiveness of technology operations and consultations. Sound administration, ensuring accurate registering of changes, faults, time, costs and solutions. Update technical documentation and plans for future reference. Feedback, advice, reports and communication with management Mentoring and on-the-job, formal and informal training of team members and junior staff, in order to ensure a competent staff compliment and knowledge sharing of expertise. Plan contingencies, back –up strategies and develop their implementations, within the Facilities to ensure quick recovery. Prompt response to fault call - out, assessment of the situation and alternatives, in order to provide a solution that will ensure 24/7 broadcast ability. Must be shift competent within 4 months, i.e. understanding and being shift competent within the facilities and agree to 24/7 standby. INHERENT/MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team and lead the team if required. Physical attributes: Excellent hearing and eyesight (no colour blindness). Physically able Proficient in MS Office, i.e. Excel, Word, Outlook and Power Point. Ability to work under pressure and handle conflict Willingness to work irregular hours and shifts to sustain 24/7 Post Production and News facility environment IT Network knowledge Essential. Computer literate (A+), Network knowledge (N+). QUALIFICATIONS 3/4 Year National Diploma/Degree Electrical Engineering S4/T3,(Light current/Computer Systems) (NQF 6/7) EXPERIENCE 3 Years’ experience in technical maintenance & fault finding of broadcasting equipment within a Post Production Environment. Good understanding of the workings of a Post Production or News Facility. Experience with website system administration in a Portal and Content Management environment A comprehensive understanding of digital television standards, file formats and acquisition formats. Interpret and use the digital test instruments. Electronic equipment and project design, construction, modifications and repairs to component level. Mechanical repairs and modifications of equipment or accessories (e.g. video tape machines, Autocue systems, LTO tape systems, etc.) The ability to work independently, in a team and be self motivated is essential. KNOWLEDGE Knowledge, experience and skills pertaining to the TV Broadcast environment, involving Broadcast Media Servers, Mam systems, Non-linear Craft Editing, LTO Archive systems and Graphics Software’s. Good Knowledge & understanding of IT security Good knowledgebase of broadcast equipment, and the necessary experience to use the tools thereby ensuring adherence to technical specifications Knowledge & understanding of circuit diagrams and broadcast system diagrams. Ability to perform, modifications and installations of new and existing systems and technical equipment; hardware and software. Ability to repair, configuring/ set-up, test and operate broadcast equipment. Ability to plan contingencies, back –up strategies and develop their implementations to ensure quick recovery. Ability to translate technical terms, workflows and provide support, advice and consultation to clients, in order to provide technological and operational solutions. Develop, monitor and assess the external environment, new equipment, technologies and technology trends, in order to enhance the efficiencies and effectiveness of technology operations and consultations. Ability to plan and implement projects. Ability to write Technical/ Operational reports, e.g. report writing, shift reports, fault reports etc.
