About The Role

At NorthBay Health, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist II is a staff level position reporting directly to the Supervisor, Laboratory Director and the Medical Director is assigned to perform, interpret, and report accurate and timely laboratory testing in the sections of the laboratory assigned according to standard operating procedures and policies and in accordance with state and federal laboratory law. This position also may supervise technicians and other nonindependent practioners. Must be able to use critical thinking skills, make independent judgement based on knowledge of laboratory medicine and disease processes.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

  • Performs, interprets, reviews, and documents quality control and patient results according to established policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes and resolves complex issues that impact test performance.
  • Communicates proactively, consistently, clearly, and honestly using the SBARQ format.
  • Assists with the validation of new tests and instrumentation, including the development, review, and revision of required procedures.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and maintains accurate records. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and performs minor repairs to optical, electronic, and mechanical systems in accordance with manufacturer instructions and department policies.
  • Prepares reagents, calibrates instrumentation, and verifies accuracy. Maintains appropriate inventory levels of supplies and reagents within the assigned section.
  • Assists with training and competency assessment of new staff and existing staff on new procedures.
  • Independently resolves most problems and manages difficult situations with minimal supervision. Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills to comprehend technical information and collaborate with medical professionals.
  • Supports and actively participates in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

  • B.S. is required. Graduation from an approved school of medical technology is required.

Licensure/Certification

  • State of California Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
  • ASCP or equivalent desired.
  • Meets state and federal requirements for supervising the performance of high complexity laboratory testing as outlined in CLIA 88 and the State Title for Laboratories.

Experience

  • Three years as a registered technologist in an acute care hospital desired.

Skills

  • Phlebotomy, basic medical terminology, typing, math and computer skills.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in the following age groups: Geriatric, Adult, Young Adult, Pediatric and Neonatal.
