About the Role

Maple–ELL is Pearson’s lesson and content authoring platform for English Language Learning courseware, supporting the creation of titles, units, lessons, activities, and interactive H5P-based templates across learner segments such as Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary, and Adult. The platform connects the authoring experience in Maple with downstream publishing and delivery flows through PRIZM and Pearson learning platforms, making quality, release readiness, automation, and end-to-end validation critical to successful learner and educator experiences.

Pearson is seeking an experienced Quality Engineering Manager to lead the Maple–ELL quality engineering function. In this role, you will own the quality strategy, test tooling, automation approach, release validation, and execution model for Maple authoring, templates, PRIZM integration, and related end-to-end workflows.

You will manage and guide QE engineers, partner closely with product, engineering, content, and platform teams, and drive a culture of quality across in-sprint testing, regression, responsiveness, accessibility, performance, production triage, and release readiness for Maple–ELL.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define, own, and continuously improve the overall Maple–ELL quality strategy across Maple authoring, lesson builder capabilities, H5P templates, PRIZM integration, and downstream ELL delivery workflows.
  • Ensure strong test coverage across all Maple components, including templates, authoring workflows, preview experiences, responsiveness, accessibility, integrations, publishing flows, and regression areas.
  • Serve as the primary QE point of contact for the ELL team and partner closely with ELL stakeholders, product leaders, engineering teams, content teams, and platform teams to ensure requirements are clearly understood, validated, and delivered with high quality.
  • Represent quality expectations for ELL as the client/partner team, ensuring their functional, release, content, and user experience requirements are met before production readiness decisions are made.
  • Build and execute an automation strategy for Maple–ELL, with particular focus on increasing automation coverage for templates, repeatable regression scenarios, Maple-to-PRIZM flows, responsiveness checks, and critical end-to-end user journeys.
  • Strategize and lead end-to-end testing for Maple, including clear ownership across Maple, PRIZM, and downstream platform validation, with defined entry/exit criteria, test data needs, environment readiness, and handoff processes.
  • Lead in-sprint testing, regression planning, defect triage, root cause analysis, and production issue validation to ensure issues are identified early, prioritized correctly, and resolved with the right level of urgency.
  • Drive shift-left quality practices by partnering with engineering teams to improve unit, integration, contract, API, and automation coverage as part of the development workflow.
  • Establish quality gates and release readiness criteria for Maple–ELL releases, including go/no-go recommendations based on test execution, defect trends, automation results, performance indicators, and business risk.
  • Provide clear and timely reporting on quality status, test progress, automation coverage, defect health, release risks, and production readiness for engineering, product, ELL, and leadership stakeholders.
  • Define and track meaningful quality metrics, including test coverage, pass/fail trends, defect escape rate, automation progress, open defect aging, risk hotspots, and release confidence indicators.
  • Manage, coach, and develop QE engineers supporting Maple–ELL, ensuring the team operates with strong technical standards, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Create team rituals, operating standards, documentation practices, and review mechanisms that drive consistent, high-quality execution across manual testing, automation, exploratory testing, and release validation.
  • Partner with program, product, and engineering leaders during planning, sprint ceremonies, architecture reviews, and roadmap discussions to ensure quality considerations are built into requirements and delivery plans from the start.
  • Promote a culture of top-tier quality for Maple–ELL by identifying process gaps, reducing testing bottlenecks, improving tooling, and helping the QE team become a trusted partner in product delivery.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in Quality Engineering, with at least 3+ years in a technical leadership or people management role leading QE teams.
  • Hands-on end-to-end Quality Engineering experience is required, including ownership of test strategy, execution planning, defect management, release validation, and production readiness.
  • Strong experience testing complex web-based platforms, authoring tools, content management workflows, learning products, or digital education platforms.
  • Experience validating reusable templates, interactive content, preview workflows, publishing flows, configuration-driven experiences, or similar component-based product areas.
  • Proven ability to define and improve test coverage across functional, regression, integration, accessibility, responsiveness, usability, and cross-browser/device testing areas.
  • Strong automation leadership experience, including building or scaling automation frameworks, improving regression coverage, prioritizing automation backlog, and partnering with engineers to embed automation into delivery workflows.
  • Experience with modern automation tools and frameworks such as Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, REST Assured, Karate, Postman, or equivalent API/UI automation tools.
  • Strong understanding of integration testing, API validation, test data management, environment coordination, and release readiness for systems with multiple upstream and downstream dependencies.
  • Ability to define an end-to-end testing strategy across authoring, publishing, platform integration, and user-facing delivery workflows.
  • Experience leading defect triage, risk assessment, root cause analysis, go/no-go recommendations, and communication of release quality to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to produce clear quality reporting, including test progress, automation status, defect trends, release risks, coverage gaps, and production readiness indicators.
  • Familiarity with performance, scalability, accessibility, and security testing concepts for distributed web platforms.
  • Experience with JIRA, Confluence, TestRail, Zephyr, Xray, or equivalent project, defect, and test management tooling.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in Agile/Scrum delivery models and partner closely with product, engineering, program, content, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills, with the ability to act as the primary QE point of contact for partner teams such as ELL.
  • Experience managing offshore or distributed QE teams, with ability to coach engineers, set execution standards, drive accountability, and build a high-performing quality culture.
  • Location and eligibility requirement: this role is aligned to Pearson’s offshore QE delivery model, with primary operations based in India and Sri Lanka.
  • The QE team is predominantly offshore, and this role requires day-to-day, in-region leadership, coordination, and availability aligned with offshore working hours.
  • Compensation for this role is based on offshore salary bands and will not be adjusted for onshore locations.
  • Must be currently based in India or Sri Lanka and authorized to work from this region. This is not a remote/onshore role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus.
