About The Role
The Marketing Cloud Specialist supports the university’s enterprise student communications strategy through the day-to-day operation and use of Salesforce Marketing Cloud. This position helps campus partners effectively use the platform by supporting established governance processes, communication workflows, documentation, training, and user enablement. The Specialist builds and supports student communication journeys, reviews communications for alignment with established standards and best practices, and helps improve the consistency, relevance, and personalization of university communications. Working closely with the Marketing Cloud Manager, central CRM team, campus business units, and technical partners, this role also analyzes platform usage and communication effectiveness, identifies opportunities for improvement, and recommends solutions that support continued adoption and optimization of Marketing Cloud.
Support Marketing Cloud Operations
- Manage day-to-day marketing operations within Salesforce Marketing Cloud, including governance processes, documentation, and user enablement
- Responsible for reviewing output from business units, identifying any discrepancies, and consulting with business owners on proper platform standards, workflows, and best practices to ensure compliance with all operations
- Build and maintain structures, tools, and processes that support consistent intake, planning, calendaring, creation, and distribution of communications
- Develop and maintain framework, documentation, and training materials to ensure effective platform usage by campus partners, and work with the Marketing Cloud Manager to finalize and distribute these resources. and training materials to support effective platform usage by campus partners
- Coordinate with the central CRM team, Office of Communications and Marketing, partner business units, and OIT technical teams
Support Student Communications & Journeys
- Build basic enterprise-level student journeys within Salesforce Marketing Cloud
- Ensure communications align with established standards for consistency, relevance, and personalization
- Encourage adoption of Marketing Cloud as the university’s primary student communication channel
- Gather and review data related to communication effectiveness and platform usage
- Support ongoing optimization efforts by independently analyzing and making recommendations to the Marketing Cloud Manager to approve implementing updates and improvements
- Contribute as an active member and advisor to the university’s enterprise Salesforce CRM team by identifying issues and needs, presenting recommended solutions, and collaborating with the team to elevate and implement improvements
Required Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s Degree in Marketing, Business, Information Science, or related field
- Experience: 2 – 3 years of experience in marketing technology or digital marketing roles
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Working knowledge of digital communication and marketing platforms, methods, and best practices
- Knowledge of basic automation and personalization approaches within communications platforms
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet recurring deadlines
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams and represent the office professionally in campus interactions

Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree
- Experience:
- Salesforce Marketing Cloud Email Specialist certification
- Experience working in a higher education marketing, communications, or IT environment
- Experience working with Salesforce Marketing Cloud or similar enterprise marketing platforms
- Experience with Marketing Cloud Connect for CRM/Marketing Cloud integration
- Knowledge of data governance, privacy, and compliance requirements
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Working knowledge of SQL for querying, filtering, and managing data extensions
- Working knowledge of AMPscript for dynamic content and personalization
- Ability to bridge business requirements and Marketing Cloud capabilities
- Basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and responsive email design principles
Work Location
- Location: Knoxville, TN
- On-site, with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement following the successful completion of training and/or probationary period
Compensation and Benefits
- UT market range: MR10
- Anticipated hiring range: $60,000 - $70,000, depending on experience
