Role Overview

UIPTD is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join our OHL and substation structures team, supporting EPC delivery for SSE, SPEN, NGED, and National Grid. OHL structural experience is desired given the specialised and relatively scarce nature of this discipline, but UIPTD will equally consider candidates with strong transferable experience from adjacent structural fields — masts, towers, bridges, or other slender and dynamically-loaded structures — who are keen to develop OHL-specific expertise.

Key Responsibilities

OHL Structural Design

  • Structural analysis and design of lattice towers, wood pole, and steel pole structures under the technical oversight of the Principal Structural Engineer
  • Tower/pole capacity assessment for reconductoring, uprating, and line diversion or refurbishment schemes
  • Production and checking of structural calculations, reports, and drawings for OHL structures
  • Use of PLS-CADD / PLS-POLE or equivalent software for structural analysis of towers and poles

Substation Structures

  • Structural design and checking of substation gantries, busbar support structures, and plant support steelwork
  • Structural assessment of existing substation structures to support plant replacement or uprating projects

Project Delivery

  • Work within multi-discipline project teams to deliver structural design outputs to programme and budget
  • Attend and contribute to design review meetings with clients (SSE, SPEN, NGED, National Grid)
  • Support construction phase activities including RFI responses, site queries, and structural inspection
  • Contribute structural input to feasibility studies and options assessments for OHL and substation schemes

Development & Mentoring

  • Work directly with the Principal Structural Engineer and incumbent senior team members to build OHL-specific structural competency ahead of planned succession
  • Mentor and technically support Intermediate and Graduate Engineers on structural matters
  • Progress toward Chartered status (if not already held) with UIPTD's structured support and CPD funding

Quality & Safety

  • Ensure structural design outputs comply with BS EN 50341, structural Eurocodes, ENA technical specifications, and client standards
  • Contribute to Designers Risk Assessments and structural design documentation under CDM 2015
  • Apply safe-by-design principles across all structural design outputs

Requirements

Essential

  • Degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 5 years structural engineering experience, including exposure to slender, guyed, or dynamically-loaded structures (lattice towers, masts, poles, or similar)
  • Working knowledge of structural steel design (BS EN 1993) and structural analysis principles
  • Experience of foundation design for structures subject to overturning, uplift, and lateral loading
  • Ability to produce and check structural calculations and reports to a good technical standard
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within a multi-discipline design team
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • Experience of OHL lattice tower, wood pole, or steel pole structural design
  • Experience of PLS-CADD / PLS-POLE or equivalent structural analysis software
  • Experience of substation structural design (gantries, plant support steelwork)
  • Transferable experience from telecoms masts, transmission towers, bridges, or other wind-sensitive slender structures
  • Working towards or holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IStructE, ICE, or equivalent
  • Experience of SSE, SPEN, NGED, or National Grid framework delivery

What UIPTD Offers

  • Competitive senior-level salary commensurate with experience
  • Horsham preferred, Glasgow or Warrington considered
  • Direct mentoring from long-standing OHL structural specialists as part of a planned succession pathway to Principal Engineer
  • Structured development into OHL-specific structural practice for candidates from adjacent disciplines
  • Chartership support and CPD funding
  • Company pension scheme
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
