About The Role

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR), Athletic and Facility Services Division (AFS) is seeking high-energy and enthusiastic individuals who have a passion for working with children, to serve as Gymnastics Coach to instruct/coach within our recreation class program! Our gymnastics coaches offer preschool to youth-aged participants, gymnastics classes, clinics, camps, special events and more!

The Arlington County Recreational Gymnastics program offers a variety of classes for preschool, youth, teens, and adult participants each year, providing a safe and fun experience in gymnastics for everyone. Our preschool, youth, and teen participants cultivate our competitive teams, the Arlington Aerials (women’s team) and Arlington Tigers (men’s team), who compete locally and nationally. Our gymnastics program is housed at the Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center, a 30,000-sf facility that includes 20,000-sf of gymnastics equipment across two rooms.

Responsibilities include

  • Providing tailored gymnastics instruction/coaching to participants’ needs while evaluating individual performance;
  • Preparing for classes by reviewing provided and supplemental lesson plans or curriculum;
  • Setting up equipment prior to class and breaking down equipment after class;
  • Inspecting equipment and reporting unsafe equipment/conditions to supervisor;
  • Completing attendance and evaluation reports in addition to other documentation; and
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have the following

  • Demonstrated experience in gymnastics instruction/coaching, with strong communication, organization, prioritization, and adaptability skills;
  • Ability to motivate diverse groups and effectively manage shifting assignments and priorities;
  • Strong evaluation and decision-making skills; and
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and digital information management.
  • High School Diploma/Equivalent; and
  • 400 hours of technical experience in gymnastics (may come from a variety of sources such as work, participation, or volunteer).

Substitution : Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

Desirables : Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following

  • Recreational or Competitive gymnastics coaching;
  • Working in a USA Gymnastics member club setting;
  • Spotting children, teens, adults in gymnastics skills; and
  • Lifting gymnastics/heavy equipment.

Special Requirements

Must possess First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment, which may include the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. Additional Information

Work hours: Schedule may vary based on facility events. Must be available to work varying shifts, including weekday mornings or evenings and weekends. Examples include Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. or 3:30–9:00 p.m.; Saturday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
