Role description

Arcadis is seeking a Junior Biologist to join our Ecological Services team in British Columbia (Vancouver). This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting ecological assessments, environmental permitting, and field-based data collection projects.

As Junior Biologist, you will work alongside experienced biologists and environmental professionals to support a variety of ecological projects throughout British Columbia. You will contribute to field surveys, data collection, technical reporting, and environmental planning initiatives while developing practical skills in environmental consulting and stewardship. This role offers exposure to multidisciplinary project teams and the opportunity to build a strong foundation in applied ecology, regulatory processes, and environmental assessment work.

Role accountabilities

As a Biologist, you will apply your technical knowledge to provide high quality deliverables to support planning and permitting for a variety of projects. You will be an important member of the Ecological Services team interacting with other biologists and ecologists, environmental specialists, planners, engineers, senior technical experts and project/program managers as part of an interdisciplinary team.

You will be responsible for completing flora and fauna surveys, terrestrial and aquatic habitat delineation and assessments, and other environmental surveys. This will require a working knowledge of GPS systems and the ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours.

This role will require the ability to travel, including overnight travel, which will be primarily during the field season.

You will be tasked with preparing technical reports, work plans, and other environmental documents to support environmental permitting, and you will lead the preparation of regulatory permit applications (e.g., DFO permits, Species at Risk Permits).

Additional tasks may include stakeholder engagement and indigenous consultation as well as liaison with government agencies.

Qualifications & Experience

Candidates should have a strong interest in terrestrial and aquatic ecology and environmental consulting, along with excellent organizational, communication, and technical writing skills. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team. This position requires a willingness to conduct fieldwork, including hiking and working outdoors for extended periods in a variety of terrain and weather conditions, while consistently following Arcadis health and safety procedures during field and office activities. A valid driver's license and the ability to travel to project sites as needed are also required.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
• 3+ years of experience conducting surveys including flora/fauna surveys, terrestrial and/or aquatic habitat assessments, as well as the completion of associated reporting
• Experience with regulatory compliance
• Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive reports and/or permit applications

Preferred Qualifications

• Registered Professional Biologist or similar registration, or eligibility for registration.
• Previous experience in the planning, permitting, and/or compliance with provincial or federal acts and regulations in support of oil and gas, mining, construction, infrastructure development and/or environmental protection projects.
• Familiarity with species identification, habitat assessments, or field survey techniques.
• Experience using GPS devices, GIS software, or environmental data collection tools.

The salary range for this position is $58,000 - 87,000. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
