About The Role

DescriptionOverall Responsibility

The Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely execution of accounting and financial activities for Food For The Poor's Honduras operations. The role manages day-to-day accounting transactions, invoice review and payment processing, account reconciliations, financial reporting support, and the financial review and payment of payroll prepared by the Human Resources team in Honduras.

Working closely with the Controller and Accounting team at headquarters, the Accountant ensures Honduras financial activities are appropriately recorded, reconciled, documented, and consolidated with organizational accounting processes. The role also serves as the primary day-to-day liaison with the external accounting firm responsible for local tax filings and audit support.

Key responsibilities

Accounting Operations & Financial Controls

Manage day-to-day accounting activities for the Honduras office, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded, supported, and processed in accordance with organizational policies and accounting practices.

Review invoices and supporting documentation for accuracy, authorization, and appropriate coding; process approved vendor and other payments.

Perform bank and account reconciliations, resolve discrepancies, and support month-end and year-end closing activities.

Maintain complete and accurate accounting records and supporting documentation.

Payroll Review & Payment

Perform the financial review of the bi-monthly payroll prepared by Human Resources, validating payroll totals, supporting documentation, funding requirements, and accounting treatment.

Coordinate and process payroll payments following established authorization and financial control procedures.

Reconcile payroll transactions and partner with Human Resources to resolve discrepancies prior to payment.

Headquarters Coordination & Reporting

  • Coordinate with the Controller and headquarters Accounting team to consolidate Honduras accounting activities into organizational financial processes and reporting.
  • Prepare financial information, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation according to established reporting timelines.
  • Support financial reporting, cash requirements, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis for Honduras operations.

Tax, Audit & External Accounting Coordination

  • Serve as the primary operational liaison with the external accounting firm responsible for Honduras tax filings and audit services.
  • Provide accurate and timely records and documentation required for tax filings, statutory requirements, and audits, and monitor related deadlines and deliverables.
  • Support internal and external audits and coordinate with the Controller to address accounting, tax, audit, or compliance matters.

QualificationsEducation and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Professional accounting registration or certification in Honduras preferred.

Experience

  • 3–5 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within a corporate, nonprofit, or multinational environment.
  • Experience with accounts payable, reconciliations, financial reporting, payroll accounting, and month-end closing processes required.
  • Experience coordinating with external accounting, tax, or audit providers preferred.

Skills and Competencies

Fully Bilingual (English/Spanish) required.

Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial controls, reconciliations, accounts payable, and general ledger processes.

Working knowledge of Honduran accounting, tax, payroll, and financial compliance requirements.

Strong analytical, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines accurately.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting/financial systems.

Effective communication and collaboration skills for working across departments and with external service providers.

High degree of integrity, accountability, discretion, and confidentiality when handling financial and payroll information.
