This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Software Engineer - RTOS & Networking based in the United States.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will help design and advance software for high-assurance, mission-critical embedded <systems.You> will focus on RTOS and networking capabilities within a modular software platform supporting demanding edge-computing environments.The role offers the opportunity to architect and implement networking protocols while ensuring deterministic, hard real-time performance and <reliability.You> will work across hypervisor, operating-system, networking, and application layers to analyze performance and solve complex low-level challenges.Your work will contribute to secure, scalable, and certifiable systems used across aerospace, defense, automotive, medical, and industrial <applications.You> will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams while contributing to certification activities and production-quality software.This is a hands-on opportunity for an experienced embedded engineer who enjoys solving technically challenging problems at the intersection of networking, RTOS, and mission-critical computing.

Accountabilities

  • Architect, design, implement, test, and document embedded networking software and services, including IPv4, IPv6, TCP, UDP, IPsec, and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN).
  • Develop and maintain software for embedded systems with a strong focus on hard real-time performance, reliability, efficiency, scalability, and stability.
  • Analyze and optimize hypervisor, RTOS, and network performance to identify bottlenecks and improve system behavior.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate networking protocols, application stacks, and other platform technologies effectively.
  • Troubleshoot complex low-level software and networking issues, determining whether problems originate in hardware, software, or system integration.
  • Develop application-level solutions using POSIX and ARINC 653 programming models.
  • Contribute to RTOS, virtualization, hypervisor, and related tooling initiatives as required.
  • Support the generation, review, and maintenance of software certification data for high-assurance systems.
  • Use performance-analysis and packet-capture tools such as perf, ftrace, tcpdump, and Wireshark to diagnose and optimize system behavior.
  • Contribute to Agile development processes, including source control, code review, continuous integration, and automated testing workflows.
  • Perform additional engineering responsibilities as needed while managing multiple technical priorities effectively.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, with at least 5 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong C programming skills, including experience with common APIs and programming models such as POSIX and ARINC 653.
  • Hands-on experience with networking protocols including TCP, UDP, IPv4, IPv6, IPsec, and/or TSN.
  • Professional experience with at least one RTOS, such as LynxOS-178, VxWorks, QNX, or FreeRTOS, or experience with Linux kernel-space development.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex software, networking, and kernel-level problems.
  • Experience using performance-analysis and network-diagnostic tools, including perf, ftrace, tcpdump, and Wireshark.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and development tools such as Jira, Confluence, Git, and Gerrit.
  • Understanding of CI/CD workflows and tools such as Jenkins or Azure DevOps.
  • Scripting and automation experience using Python, Bash, or comparable languages.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot, Codex, or Claude Code to produce production-quality software.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a technically demanding environment.
  • US citizenship is required.

Nice to have

  • Experience developing Linux device drivers and bootloaders.
  • Assembly programming experience on x86 or ARM architectures.
  • Familiarity with DO-178C software lifecycle and certification standards.
  • Contributions to open-source software projects or communities.
  • Hands-on root-cause analysis and kernel-level debugging experience.
  • Knowledge of RTOS, hypervisors, and virtualization technologies such as VMware, KVM, Xen, or QEMU.
  • Understanding of concurrency and multicore SMP/AMP architectures.
