POSITION SUMMARY
The Operations Manager is responsible for leading the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of a chemical manufacturing facility. This position provides strategic and day-to-day leadership for production, manufacturing personnel, process performance, equipment reliability, quality, environmental compliance, and continuous improvement.
The Operations Manager ensures that manufacturing activities meet production schedules, quality requirements, customer expectations, and company objectives while maintaining a strong commitment to employee safety, process safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance.
ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct daily manufacturing operations to achieve production, quality, cost, and delivery objectives.
Develop and execute production plans based on customer demand, raw-material availability, equipment capacity, and staffing.
Monitor plant performance and take corrective action when production targets or operating standards are not met.
Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for process upsets, spills, off-spec batches, and operator errors. Ensure that recommendations from these RCA's are implemented and enforced to avoid problems in the future.
Optimize manufacturing processes, production rates, yields, throughput, and operating costs.
Coordinate production activities with Maintenance, Quality, Supply Chain, EHS, and other site functions.
Ensure appropriate staffing, scheduling, training, and resource allocation to support reliable operations.
Establish and maintain effective operating procedures, work instructions, and production standards.
Maintain a strong safety culture with the expectation that all employees work safely and follow established procedures.
Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, state, local, and company requirements.
Lead efforts related to process safety management, risk assessments, management of change, operating procedures, incident investigations, and emergency preparedness, as applicable to the facility.
Promote safe handling, storage, transfer, and processing of hazardous chemicals and materials.
Monitor safety performance and implement corrective and preventive actions.
Participate in and support audits, inspections, regulatory activities, and safety initiatives.
Ensure employees receive required safety and operational training.
Assist with production planning and bulk chemical ordering as needed.
Other tasks, duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Plant Manager.
QualificationsREQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemistry, Operations Management, or a related field preferred.
- Typically 7+ years of progressive experience in chemical manufacturing, process manufacturing, or a comparable industrial environment.
- Experience using SAP in a manufacturing environment, particularly with production planning, production orders, inventory management, material consumption, and production reporting.
- Demonstrated experience managing manufacturing operations and frontline personnel.
- Strong knowledge of chemical manufacturing processes, industrial equipment, and production systems.
- Experience working within a safety- and compliance-driven manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze production data and improve operational performance.
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Exceptional written, verbal and presentation communication skills; proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Possess a high tolerance of ambiguity and flexibility with respect to job functions and working hours in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift 25 pounds individually and up to 50 pounds in tandem, as necessary;
- Ability to sit and stand for up to 8+ hours a day in a manufacturing environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work is performed in an industrial manufacturing setting with exposure to chemicals, moving machinery, and varying temperatures.
- Position may involve exposure to chemical splashes, fumes, vapors, and airborne particulates.
- Work may involve handling or working in proximity to corrosive and other hazardous chemicals in a controlled environment.
- Exposure to noise, vibrations, and other conditions typical of a production environment.
- Employees are required to follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
