About The Role
About the Program
The School Leadership Trainee (SLT) Program is Guidepost's internal pathway for developing Guides, School Admins, and Shared Services members into future Heads of School. Rather than always hiring school leaders externally, we're investing in people who already know our culture, our children, and our Montessori philosophy. Graduates are added to our leadership pipeline and receive first consideration for School Leader openings across the organisation.
What You'll Experience
- A structured 12–18 month journey across three phases: Explore & Assess, Develop & Practise, and Demonstrate & Graduate.
- Development across six leadership pillars: Strong Leadership, People Management, Family Engagement, High Quality Programs, Financial Sustainability, and Operational Excellence.
- A dedicated mentor (your Regional Director or Regional Manager, sometimes supplemented by an experienced School Leader), with fortnightly 1:1s.
- Real stretch assignments, workshops, shadowing, and an Individual Development Plan built around your specific gaps.
- From Phase 2, 10–15% time release from your current role for trainees progressing well.
What We're Looking For
- Current Guide, School Admin, or Shared Services team member.
- At least 1 full academic year of service in your current role.
- Rated ‘Meeting Expectations’ or above in your most recent performance review.
- Not currently on a Performance Improvement Plan.
- Your School Leader is aware of your interest in applying.
- A genuine interest in school leadership and a growth mindset — prior formal leadership experience is not required.
Self-Assessment Rubric
As part of your application, you'll rate yourself on each pillar below and write a short reflection. Use this rubric as a guide for what strong performance looks like at each pillar:
Pillar
Here are examples of what it looks like
Strong Leadership
Sets clear direction, makes sound decisions under pressure, consistently role-models our Montessori philosophy.
People Management
Coaches and develops others, gives honest feedback, resolves conflict constructively.
Family Engagement
Builds trusted relationships with families, communicates proactively, handles concerns with empathy and professionalism.
High Quality Programs
Ensures consistent, high-fidelity implementation of the Montessori curriculum and classroom standards.
Financial Sustainability
Understands budget levers, contributes to enrollment/retention, makes cost-conscious decisions.
Operational Excellence
Runs day-to-day operations smoothly, anticipates issues early, upholds compliance and safety standards.
What This Is — and Isn't
This is a genuine development investment, not a guaranteed promotion. Selection is competitive (typically 4–8 trainees per intake), and graduation adds you to our leadership pipeline rather than placing you directly into a role. We believe in being upfront about this from the very first step.
