About The Role
This position will play a critical role within the Second Line of Defense Compliance team supporting the U.S. Consumer Proprietary Lending portfolios with a high focus on Cash Back products such as Blue Cash Everyday while also supporting legacy lending cards and other products. The position will provide strategic support to drive innovation for the business while building an effective framework for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Focus will be dedicated to new product development (including associated Card benefits), marketing strategies, risk management initiatives, process control, customer communications and complaints and issue management.
Provide Compliance Oversight to First Line of Defense USCS Card business stakeholders on regulatory requirements applicable to projects including new product launches. This includes providing effective challenges to business stakeholders while also interacting effectively with them and other support units to ensure proper communication across organizational lines. Review and perform Effective Challenges to marketing campaign strategies and advertising materials to adequately mitigate compliance risks and provide regulatory guidance on applicability of consumer credit laws including but not limited to Truth in Lending, UDAAP and Fair Lending. Research federal, state and local laws, regulations, American Express National Bank and Enterprise level policies and procedures to provide guidance on regulatory requirements to business stakeholders. Support new initiatives through the New Product Approval (NPA) governance (and other similar governance processes) and integration of effective controls, testing & ongoing monitoring into new and existing processes. Effectively support the Bank’s Issue Management framework processes and policies to ensure timely closure of gaps, customer remediation and other milestones, where required. Strong focus on controls and processes by analyzing data and perform effective challenges supporting the 1LOD in the development of their processes. Oversee and support the maintenance of a robust control environment to monitor third-party risk. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with business partners and internal stakeholders (e.g. other Global Risk and Compliance colleagues, General Counsel’s Organization, Control Management, Independent Compliance Testing, Privacy, Internal Audit Group)
Demonstrated proficient knowledge of U.S Consumer open-end credit laws and regulations and banking regulations governing credit card activities and their impact on products, operations, and services. Ability to research, assess and determine regulatory impact to business initiatives and influence decisions accordingly. Strong leadership skills and proven ability to influence decisions, communicate and collaborate effectively at all levels of the organization; including the ability to influence others to achieve desired results. Strong interpersonal skills to support business partners and proven ability to develop and grow relationships. Ability to independently identify and effectively communicate compliance risks and requirements to all levels of staff and management; including the ability to influence others to achieve desired results. Demonstrated ability to make decisions independently, work well under pressure, meeting deadlines and handle multiple tasks while prioritizing work in a highly deadline-intensive environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Prior credit card industry, compliance, legal or risk experience. Bachelor’s Degree, strongly preferred. Employment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these positions.
