About The Role
Position Purpose The Engineer II – Gas Engineering performs routine to moderately complex engineering work for MGE’s gas distribution system with increasing independence. This developing-level role supports project design, construction coordination, system documentation, permitting, and stakeholder communication while continuing to build technical judgment, utility knowledge, and ownership of assigned work. Core Responsibilities Note: This is not an all-inclusive listing. Performs routine to moderately complex gas engineering assignments related to gas mains, services, regulator stations, and related facilities. Prepares designs, estimates, drawings, documentation, and project materials with guidance on unusual or complex issues. Coordinates defined project activities with Gas Operations, Construction, contractors, municipalities, developers, and customers. Reviews construction plans, maps, field information, and utility records to identify conflicts, support project decisions, and recommend solutions. Supports permitting, environmental documentation, traffic control planning, stormwater requirements, and right-of-way coordination. Applies MGE standards, safety practices, engineering procedures, and regulatory requirements to assigned work. Uses CAD, GIS, GPS, survey equipment, and engineering systems to develop accurate project records and deliverables. Identifies process or design improvement opportunities and shares recommendations with more experienced engineers or leadership. Skills Gas distribution design, project documentation, and construction coordination – Developing to Proficient Road construction plan review, utility record review, and issue identification – Developing to Proficient Safety, environmental, permitting, traffic control, and regulatory requirements – Developing to Proficient CAD, GIS, GPS, survey tools, computerized design systems, and technical records – Developing to Proficient Communication, customer service, stakeholder coordination, and follow-through – Proficient Education Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited program required; equivalent education and experience may be considered. Engineer-in-Training certification or ability to obtain preferred. Experience 2–4 years of relevant engineering, utility, project design, construction coordination, or related technical experience preferred. Experience supporting gas distribution, utility infrastructure, permitting, construction, or field coordination work preferred. Work Location This hybrid role is based at our Madison, WI headquarters. While three days onsite is the minimum, team collaboration and business needs may require additional in-office presence.
