
Technician - Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer

About The Role
JOB SUMMARY: The Technician is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) system. This position performs routine inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and first-response repairs while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, company safety standards, and operating procedures. The technician serves as the first point of contact for identifying equipment issues and coordinating with maintenance, engineering, and operations personnel to maximize system uptime and performance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor the daily operation and performance of the Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) system.
- Perform routine equipment inspections and document operating conditions.
- Monitor temperatures, pressures, airflow, combustion efficiency, emissions equipment, and process alarms.
- Respond promptly to equipment alarms and abnormal operating conditions.
- Perform startup, shutdown, and operational adjustments in accordance with established procedures.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on burners, valves, dampers, fans, instrumentation, heat exchange, and associated equipment.
- Inspect expansion joints, ductwork, seals, and combustion components for wear or damage.
- Replace filters, gaskets, thermocouples, sensors, ignition components, and other consumable parts as required.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and instrumentation issues.
- Coordinate with maintenance personnel on corrective repairs and scheduled outages.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection logs, and operating reports.
- Ensure compliance with all MSHA, EPA, local, state, and company environmental regulations.
- Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, hot work, and other applicable safety procedures.
- Maintain housekeeping standards in and around the RTO equipment area.
- Assist with annual inspections, emissions testing, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment reliability, energy efficiency, and emissions reduction.
- Support production by minimizing equipment downtime through proactive maintenance and rapid response.

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical school, trade, or associate degree in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical Technology, Electrical Technology, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 2–5 years of industrial maintenance or equipment operation experience.
- Experience with Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs), thermal oxidizers, boilers, combustion systems, or industrial air pollution control equipment preferred.
- Basic understanding of combustion systems, burners, PLC-controlled equipment, motors, fans, valves, and instrumentation.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and equipment manuals.
- Familiarity with preventive and predictive maintenance practices.
- Basic computer skills including CMMS and Microsoft Office applications.

- Ability to identify abnormal equipment conditions before failures occur.

- Attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
 
Physical Requirements
- Frequently walk, climb ladders, and work on elevated platforms.
- Lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Work in hot, noisy, dusty, and industrial environments.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators when necessary.
- Work around high-temperature equipment and rotating machinery.
- Ability to work in confined spaces when properly trained and authorized.
 
Work Environment
- Rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required.
- On-call responsibilities during equipment outages or emergency situations may be required.
- Exposure to heat, noise, dust, and varying weather conditions for outdoor equipment.
 
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company safety policies and environmental procedures.
- Comply with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work permits, and other safety programs.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, and equipment deficiencies.
- Participate in safety meetings, training, and emergency response drills.
