ABOUT THE ROLE Helen Keller School of Alabama is seeking a passionate, dedicated Special Education Teacher to provide comprehensive, multi-subject instruction to students. The ideal candidate will foster a positive, supportive learning environment, utilize differentiated instruction to meet individual student needs. The Special Education Teacher will provide individualized instruction and support to students participating in the Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards curriculum. The teacher will adapt instruction to meet diverse communication, cognitive, behavioral, and functional learning needs. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in Special Education Must hold a valid Alabama Teaching Certificate Must meet suitability/background requirements for employment . PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Master’s Degree in Special Education One (1) year or more of classroom experience working with students with sensory loss POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Key Responsibilities & Essential Duties Instructional Excellence: Provide comprehensive, multi-subject elementary instruction. Develop, submit, and implement creative lesson plans, course overviews, and substitute teacher plans aligned with school curriculum and state standards. Differentiated Learning: Utilize differentiated instruction tailored to individual student needs, continually evaluating, reporting, and modifying instruction based on student progress. IEP Management: Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each assigned student. Confidently lead IEP meetings with parents, guardians, and colleagues. Classroom Management: Establish clear standards for classroom behavior and provide age-appropriate discipline in accordance with the School Handbook to maintain a safe, positive learning environment. Must be able to manage maladaptive behaviors. Records & Administration: Maintain meticulous student records, including grades, attendance, testing, and IEP documentation. Clearly communicate this data to parents. Collaboration & Professionalism: Cooperate and communicate professionally regarding student and department matters with parents, administrators, support personnel, AIDB staff, and the general public. School Engagement: Maintain punctuality and regular attendance for classes, meetings, and conferences. Participate in workshops, assist with in-service training programs, and support various student extracurricular activities. Student Support: Manage and assist with development of self-care plans and routines for students to promote their overall wellbeing and meet daily hygiene needs. Job Qualifications & Requirements Maintain a valid Alabama Educator certification Ability to lift 50 lbs. with assistance, push, pull, and bend to meet the assistance needs of students with disabilities. Mandatory Training & Professional Compliance: Maintain a working knowledge of AIDB Policies and Procedures, the ASD Staff Manual, and the HKS Handbook. Serve as an acceptable role model for students through professional grooming, dress, and conduct. Technical & Flexible Skills: Proficiency in MSOffice Suite & Google Workspace Ability to adapt and teach other subject areas or grade levels as needed based on student scheduling. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
