This role serves as the investigative powerhouse of our entertainment brand, delivering the agenda-setting scoops, industry exposés, and behind-the-scenes reporting that set our premium journalism apart from free competitors. Balancing major investigative tentpoles with a regular, must-read column on the business and politics of media, you will hold Australian showbiz to account and drive subscriber conversion.

This role can be based out of our Sydney or Melbourne office.

About the role

In this role, you will lead the industry conversation with unmatched enterprise reporting and sharp commentary:

  • Spearhead deep-dive investigative journalism into the Australian screen and media sectors, such as inside TV ecosystems, industry scandals, and high-stakes contract disputes.
  • Write the premier national broadcast and media column weekly, dissecting the politics, corporate moves, and cultural impact of networks, streaming platforms, and audio giants.
  • Own and execute landmark editorial projects on schedule
  • Track the money and power behind Australian celebrity culture, breaking enterprise stories
  • Partner with state-based Confidential reporters to elevate local tips into national investigations, and contribute major long-reads and video projects.
  • Contribute punchy, opinionated commentary that builds reader habit, and feature as an authoritative on-camera talent voice
  • Flexibility on content - while each writer owns their primary round, our entertainment pillar operates as an agile team where all journalists actively collaborate and contribute to our biggest national tentpoles, investigations, and breaking cultural moments

Who are you?

We are seeking an experienced investigative reporter and engaging columnist with exceptional news judgement:

  • You have extensive experience breaking exclusive enterprise stories, industry investigations, and high-impact scoops in entertainment or business/media journalism.
  • You possess an established, active network of confidential contacts across Australian television networks, streaming services, production houses, and talent management agencies.
  • You have a compelling, sharp, and authoritative writing style capable of crafting witty, analytical commentary that turns casual readers into loyal subscribers.
  • You have a strong working understanding of Australian defamation, privacy, and contempt law, with demonstrated experience navigating legal risk management under tight deadlines.
  • You excel at balancing complex, multi-week investigative projects and thorough fact-checking alongside regular, high-frequency column deadlines.
  • You are confident discussing complex industry news on camera and in audio formats, helping to expand the reach of our investigative reporting across social and video channels.

Why Join Us?

  • Drive the national conversation with the backing of Australia’s most influential entertainment platform.
  • Dedicated resources and editorial support to pursue hard-hitting, agenda-setting investigations.
