About The Role

At the World Bank, a member of the World Bank Group (WBG), you’ll join a diverse, global community working across cultures, disciplines, and borders to address the world’s most pressing development challenges. With 1.2 billion young people reaching working age in the decade ahead, the challenge of job creation has never been greater. Through partnerships across 145 countries and more than 182 offices worldwide, we work with governments, private sector, development partners and other stakeholders to invest in people, strengthen markets, and deliver scalable, data-driven solutions that generate more and better jobs and improve lives. For more information, visit <https://www.worldbank.org/en/who-we-are/ibrd> Cameroon’s education system is among the most complex in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is organized around two parallel linguistic subsystems — Francophone and Anglophone — and is overseen by six ministries: the Ministry of Basic Education (MINEDUB), the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC), the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training (MINEFOP), the Ministry of Higher Education (MINESUP), the Ministry of Youth and Civic Education, and the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Territorial Administration (MINEPAT), which is responsible for coordinating the Education and Training Sector Strategy (ETSS 2030). This fragmented institutional architecture creates significant challenges for sector planning, resource allocation, and data management, and remains a major constraint to effective sector governance. World Bank Portfolio Response The World Bank's engagement is comprehensive, with interventions at the basic, secondary and technical and vocational education levels, as well as in skills training, while also engaged in policy dialogue and support to deep systemic education reforms. The Education Reform Support Project (ERSP, P160926) – a US$175 million IDA grant complemented by a US$52.45 million GPE grant and Additional Financing of US$45 million – targets the foundational challenges of access, quality, teacher policy, and sector governance at the primary level. The Secondary Education and Skills Development Project (SESD, P170561) - a US$125 million IDA credit – addresses equity and relevance at the secondary and skills levels, with a specific focus on girls' access and market-oriented TVET programs. Active Trust fund instruments, including the TF SCG (System Capacity Grant) and the INSPIRE initiative, provide targeted complementary support for analytics, capacity building, and innovation. Looking ahead, the Cameroon education portfolio is expected to expand with two operations currently in the pipeline – a PforR targeting governance and accountability reforms in basic education, and a PforR focused on skills development and TVET system strengthening – reflecting the Government's commitment to deepening sector reform across both levels. The World Bank is also active in knowledge generation on key issues in the education sector in Cameroon.
