Sr. System Administrator
Flexion Inc · Remote, Wisconsin, United States
About The Role
Senior System Administrator - Remote
Why you want to work at Flexion:
We’re looking for a Senior System Administrator with an unwavering passion for building reliable, secure cloud infrastructure. Most of the work we do is on large-scale, enterprise-wide systems (both commercial and government)—this project in particular will help ensure the uninterrupted, secure, and compliant operation of critical federal acquisition and assistance systems.
At Flexion (an agile software company that’s been delivering excellence for over 25 years), our company culture is built on autonomy, trust, and transparency. We empower teams to remain self-sufficient and self-directed by hiring people who can solve complex problems through collaboration—this means lending a hand and flexing your multi-skilled muscles (networking, security, automation, etc.) as needed. Every member of a cross-functional team is a leader who takes responsibility for the entire team’s success, mirroring the company’s overall low-bureaucracy structure.
We believe that growth comes from working together, and that includes supporting each other through thoughtful, constructive feedback. Flexion team members are expected to help each other grow, challenge ideas respectfully, and integrate feedback as a normal part of the workday.
What the job looks like:
You’ll be part of a multi-disciplinary, agile team responsible for the infrastructure behind the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS), which runs in a classic AWS environment. You will be the person who installs and configures that infrastructure and keeps it running.
- Install, configure, and maintain the cloud infrastructure that FPDS runs on, including EC2 instances, VPC networking, load balancing, and firewalls.
- Build servers and supporting services from initial install through production readiness, and document each configuration.
- Patch, upgrade, and harden operating systems and infrastructure components on a regular schedule, in line with federal security requirements.
- Configure and maintain network and security components such as F5 load balancers, Checkpoint firewalls, and AWS Transit Gateway.
- Automate installation and configuration with scripting and infrastructure-as-code so environments can be rebuilt consistently.
- Monitor infrastructure health, performance, capacity, and security, and respond to incidents and vulnerabilities.
- Support backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity, including the EC2 instances that host the PostgreSQL and HP Vertica databases, working alongside the database administrator.
- Collaborate with your team to design, test, deploy, and document infrastructure changes in an agile environment. Collaboration will mean pair programming, ensemble programming (“Mobbing”), or swarming with teammates for some of the day.
- Work with Software Engineers, DevSecOps Engineers, Database Administrators, and Product Managers to build and maintain an enterprise system.
- Tackle a wide variety of technical problems.
Why we want to hire you:
You can deliver in small pieces as you go, while still thinking about how they fit into the whole. You welcome change as a positive (instead of viewing it as “rework”) and never consider anything you deliver “final.” Although you understand that what you deliver may not be complete, you never knowingly deliver something that is wrong or of poor quality. You actively contribute to a learning team culture, offering and receiving feedback with curiosity and respect.
You have:
- 8+ years of systems administration experience, including significant time on cloud-hosted infrastructure
- A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience
- Strong collaborative and communication skills
- A passion for learning new technologies and the ability to do so quickly
- Knowledge and experience with several of the following:
- Linux (and Windows Server where applicable) administration: installation, configuration, patching, and performance tuning
- AWS infrastructure, including EC2, VPC, EBS, security groups, IAM, and Transit Gateway
- Enterprise network and security appliances such as F5 load balancers and Checkpoint firewalls
- Shell scripting and automation, and infrastructure-as-code with Terraform or Ansible
- Monitoring and alerting tools, vulnerability scanning, and remediation
- Backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability design
- Working in a federal or other regulated environment
At Flexion, we live by these principles:
- Speak openly and honestly with your colleagues and clients about problems and proposed solutions
- Welcome and handle changing requirements and priorities with little or no warning
- Collaborate online in small groups about 50% of the time
- Encourage simple and minimal solutions that keep options open
- Expect and vocally advocate for quality first
- Learn new practices and techniques as the situation demands
- Ensure the teams develop demonstrable software every week or two
- Do what needs to be done to deliver the product or project without ego or attitude
- Dig deep to find the root causes of problems so we can create the right solutions
- Relentlessly improve yourself, your team, and your processes
- Offer and welcome constructive feedback as a tool for continuous team and individual growth
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Codex, Copilot) as force multipliers to accelerate innovation, iterate faster, and maintain high-quality output.
