Our team is proud to support the efficient, forward-thinking protection and management of water resources at the watershed level, addressing the movement of water through urban and agricultural areas, streams, lakes, reservoirs, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and water/wastewater treatment plants.
What We're Looking For:
Michael Baker International is seeking to hire a Summer 2027 Surface Water Intern to support our Santa Ana, CA office. As the Surface Water Intern, you may be involved with any number of project support tasks. Workdays may include in-office, in the field, or remote.
Various tasks may include:
- Support hydrology and hydraulics studies through watershed delineation, as-built review, CAD/GIS support, data collection, and field investigations.
- Perform calculations for runoff volumes, flow rates, drainage capacity, pollutant loads, and other stormwater or water quality metrics.
- Prepare technical reports, memoranda, exhibits, maps, tables, and figures summarizing analyses, findings, and field observations.
- Conduct field work, including site inspections, BMP verification, drainage asset inventories, construction/industrial facility observations, and documentation of existing conditions.
- Review and summarize NPDES/MS4 permit requirements, regulatory guidance, agency correspondence, and compliance obligations.
- Develop stormwater compliance documents, including SWPPPs, WQMPs, LID Plans, BMP maintenance plans, inspection forms, and related permit materials.
- Support stormwater program implementation through data management, compliance tracking, annual reporting, public outreach, illicit discharge program support, and effectiveness assessments.
- Coordinate with project teams and public agency clients to support meetings, deliverables, schedules, and follow-up action items.
Professional Requirements:

Candidate must be enrolled and pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or Environmental Sciences at an accredited university or college.

Minimum of 2 years of completed post-secondary coursework in student’s field of study.

Minimum 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Proficiency with MS Office.

Experience with AutoCAD and GIS.
Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is $20 - $26 per hour. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
