Position Duties
The Department of Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with an area of specialization (AOS) in the History of Western Philosophy with special expertise in either Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy or Modern Western Philosophy. Area of competence (AOC) open, including Cross-Cultural Philosophy and Global Philosophical Traditions. The department is not seeking AOS/AOC in Medieval and Kantian Philosophy and is looking for expertise in other areas.
The position begins Fall 2027 and comes with a 10-month renewable contract. Responsibilities will include teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, research and publication, and service to the Department and University.
In addition to offerings in the candidate’s field of expertise, all members of the Department regularly teach in our introduction to philosophy course: Foundations of Philosophy and courses in Ethics. The successful candidate will also show a willingness to teach in our great books-styled Honors Program. Consequently, a strong background and passion for the History of Philosophy broadly conceived is a must. More generally, candidates should show evidence of excellent teaching at the undergraduate level as well as experience and/or commitment to effective and high-impact teaching practices.Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate excellent scholarly contributions (or the promise thereof) to the field of Philosophy and support the University’s mission as a Jesuit, Catholic institution.
Ph.D. must be in hand by July 2027 and teaching experience required.

The salary range for this position is $73,500 - $76,000. The successful candidate must be authorized to work in the United States. Loyola University Maryland offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes health, vision, and dental insurance and contributions towards retirement and childcare. Full-time employees, their spouses, and their dependents are eligible to receive tuition remission. Loyola University Maryland also qualifies as a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) employer. Final compensation offers are determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, job-related experience, internal equity, and alignment with organizational budget.
