A Brief Overview
The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for Stanford Health Care's organization-wide safe patient handling and mobility program. This position leads program staff, education, equipment and asset management, vendor performance, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement initiatives. The Program Manager partners with clinical and operational leaders to advance patient mobility, reduce employee injuries associated with patient handling, and promote safe, consistent patient movement practices.  The Program Manager is accountable for program development, implementation, evaluation, and sustainability across inpatient and ambulatory settings. Responsibilities include personnel management, budget and capital planning, policy development, data analysis, contract oversight, and organizational reporting.

What you will do

Program and Operational Leadership

  • Provides strategic and operational leadership for the Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program across inpatient and ambulatory settings.
  • Develops and implements program goals, service standards, policies, procedures, and performance measures aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Leads organization-wide initiatives to improve patient mobility, reduce employee injuries associated with patient handling, and promote consistent use of safe patient handling practices.
  • Evaluates current operations and develops recommendations for program improvement, expansion, and long-term sustainability.
  • Communicates program performance, risks, resource needs, and recommendations to organizational leadership.
  • Represents the Program on interdisciplinary committees, workgroups, and organizational initiatives.

Employee Management

  • Directly supervises Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Program staff and other assigned personnel.
  • Oversees recruitment, selection, onboarding, scheduling, competency development, coaching, performance management, corrective action, and retention.
  • Establishes clear performance expectations and holds staff accountable for safety, quality, productivity, documentation, and service standards.
  • Develops staffing plans based on patient needs, service demand, organizational priorities, and available resources.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings, rounding, and individual check-ins to support communication, engagement, and performance improvement.
  • Partners with Human Resources and department leadership on workforce planning and employee relations matters.

Education and Competency

  • Oversees the development, delivery, and evaluation of safe patient handling and mobility education.
  • Ensures completion of new hire education, annual competency requirements, unit-based training, champion development, and specialty training.
  • Establishes competency standards for Program staff and monitors successful completion.
  • Evaluates education outcomes using competency results, compliance data, injury trends, operational performance, and participant feedback.
  • Partners with organizational education teams to integrate safe patient handling, create job aids, and mobility content into appropriate learning programs.

Equipment, Financial, and Contract Management

  • Oversees the lifecycle management of safe patient handling and mobility equipment, including selection, acquisition, deployment, inspection, maintenance, repair, replacement, and retirement.
  • Develops and manages operating and capital budget recommendations based on program needs, equipment condition, service demand, and organizational priorities.
  • Monitors expenditures, service costs, and resource utilization and develops business cases for staffing, equipment, technology, and program growth.
  • Partners with Clinical Engineering, Supply Chain, Bio Med, Environmental Services, and clinical departments to maintain equipment availability, readiness, and appropriate use.
  • Serves as the primary operational contact for vendors supporting the Program.
  • Monitors vendor performance, contracted deliverables, service levels, expenditures, and operational concerns.
  • Participates in contract renewals, negotiations, requests for proposals, and vendor transition planning in partnership with appropriate organizational departments.
  • Evaluates emerging equipment and technology and develops evidence-based recommendations.

Quality, Safety, Compliance, and Analytics

  • Maintains Program compliance with applicable laws, regulations, accreditation requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Reviews patient-handling-related employee injury data and collaborates with appropriate partners to identify contributing factors and corrective actions.
  • Develops and monitors performance measures related to employee safety, patient mobility, equipment utilization, education compliance, service responsiveness, and operational effectiveness.
  • Conducts audits and program assessments to identify risks, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
  • Uses operational and financial data to evaluate program performance and guide decisions.
  • Develops dashboards, reports, and presentations for organizational leadership and Program stakeholders.

Organizational Partnership

  • Serves as a subject matter expert and strategic partner for safe patient handling, patient mobility, injury prevention, and equipment utilization.
  • Builds effective partnerships with Nursing, Rehabilitation Services, Occupational Health, Patient Care Services, Supply Chain, Environmental Health and Safety, Clinical Engineering, Wound Care, Human Resources, and other departments.
  • Facilitates interdisciplinary communication and resolves operational barriers affecting safe patient handling and mobility.
  • Provides consultation to clinical and operational leaders regarding Program services, workflows, equipment, training, and improvement opportunities.
  • Promotes a culture in which safe patient mobility and employee safety are shared organizational responsibilities.

Clinical and Operational Boundaries

  • Provides operational and programmatic oversight of safe patient handling and mobility activities. The Manager does not independently establish patient-specific clinical mobility plans unless permitted by the individual's professional license and assigned clinical responsibilities.
  • Partners with Nursing, Rehabilitation Services, and other clinical disciplines to support mobility practices consistent with the patient's established plan of care and applicable clinical policies.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Experience Qualifications

  • 3 years experience in safe patient handling and mobility.  Required
  • Experience in an acute care hospital. Required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to build effective relationships and collaborate across departments and leadership levels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, facilitation, and coaching skills.
  • Strong operational planning, project management, and change management skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex operational, safety, quality, and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Knowledge of health care operations, employee safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of patient mobility equipment and safe patient handling practices.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and lead work across multiple clinical and operational settings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and business reporting tools.

Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS - Basic Life Support required .

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $47.80 - $59.75 per hour
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
