About the Opportunity
As part of our continued growth, we are expanding our UK Ground Engineering capability to support a growing portfolio of diverse projects across the Defence, Nuclear, Environment and government-owned critical infrastructure sectors.

As a Ground Engineering Professional within Amentum, you will work across the project lifecycle, applying sound engineering geological and geotechnical judgement to identify and manage ground-related risks while supporting our clients and multidisciplinary project teams in delivering safe, sustainable and cost-effective solutions.
We offer a flexible hybrid working environment, combining office, site and home-based working. Harwell, Oxfordshire is our preferred base, although opportunities are available at other Amentum UK offices depending on the successful candidate.
What You'll Be Doing
As an Engineering Geologist or Geotechnical Engineer within Amentum, you will support the identification, investigation and management of ground-related risks across a diverse range of projects.
Your work may include:

  • Planning and supervision of land and overwater ground investigations, including preparation of appropriate scopes, specifications, schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Field mapping, geomorphological assessment and engineering geological walkovers.
  • Logging and interpretation of soil and rock in accordance with relevant standards.
  • Preparation of ground investigation reports, factual and interpretative reports, and geotechnical/engineering geological assessments.
  • Development and refinement of ground models, including identification of geotechnical hazards, uncertainties and constraints.
  • Assessment and interpretation of geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical information to support wider project teams.
  • Geotechnical analysis and design for foundations, retaining walls, slope stabilisation, ground improvement and other ground engineering applications.
  • Input to multidisciplinary projects and provision of practical advice on ground conditions and ground-related risks.
  • Technical construction assurance, site support and observation.
  • Contribution to bids, proposals, fee estimates and scopes of work.
  • Liaison with clients and project stakeholders to understand requirements, communicate findings and develop appropriate scopes of work.

The role will involve a combination of office and site-based work, and candidates should be comfortable undertaking and supervising fieldwork at locations across the UK.
Consultant
At Consultant level, you will have practical industry experience and be able to undertake geotechnical and engineering geological tasks with an appropriate level of technical guidance and review. You will contribute to desk studies, ground investigations, analysis, interpretation, design and reporting, as appropriate to your technical background, while continuing to develop your technical judgement and project delivery experience.
Senior
At Senior level, you will be an experienced Engineering Geologist or Geotechnical Engineer able to take greater responsibility for the planning, management and delivery of geotechnical and engineering geology work. You will work with a greater degree of technical independence, contribute to client and project discussions, provide technical guidance and review, and mentor and support the development of junior colleagues.
Here's What You'll Need
You will have practical Engineering Geology or Geotechnical Engineering experience appropriate to the level for which you are applying, together with:

  • A degree in Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or another relevant ground engineering discipline. A relevant postgraduate qualification such as an MSc or PhD would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Chartership with a relevant professional body (i.e. CEng or CGeol) would be beneficial for the Senior role.
  • Practical experience of ground engineering, ground investigations and site-based GI activities, including the interpretation of field and laboratory test data.
  • A good understanding of soil and/or rock behaviour and the principles of engineering geology and geotechnical engineering.

We encourage and support professional development towards Chartered Geologist (CGeol), Chartered Engineer (CEng) or an equivalent relevant professional qualification. For Senior candidates, achievement of chartership or significant progress towards chartership would be preferred.
Your work may include confidential projects requiring UK security vetting and appropriate UK residency. Candidates must therefore be able to achieve the required level of UK security clearance for the projects on which they will work.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Assessment and interpretation of geophysical survey information where relevant to ground investigation.

  • Experience with ground investigation, geological modelling, CAD, GIS and data management software such as OpenGround, Leapfrog, WellCAD, AutoCAD and ArcGIS, or equivalent packages.

Candidates are not expected to have experience in all of these areas, and we welcome applications from both Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering backgrounds.
Development Opportunities
We offer opportunities to develop your career in the direction that best suits your strengths and ambitions. Depending on your experience and interests, this could include greater responsibility for technical and project delivery, management of ground investigation programmes, client engagement, mentoring, team management and business development.
Amentum will support your continued professional development and progression towards relevant professional qualifications and chartership.
