The City and County of Denver offers a competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. The hiring range for this position is $93,566-$115,000/year, based on experience and education. We also offer generous benefits for full-time employees which include but are not limited to:

Location & Schedule
The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work where needed, at a job site several days a week and off-site as needed.
In this position, you can expect to work in the office at the Denver Wastewater Management building (2000 W. 3rd Ave., Denver, CO 80223) and in the field, as needed, at least three days per week.Employees must work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

The Office of Safety & Industrial Hygiene within Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is seeking a Safety and Industrial Hygiene Administrator to develop and implement goals, objectives, and policies for a comprehensive occupational health and safety program to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health standards and enhance the safety and wellbeing of the DOTI workforce.
Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform specialized level occupational health and safety work developing and implementing goals, objectives, and policies for a comprehensive occupational safety program to ensure compliance with safety and health standards, to enhance the safety and wellbeing of the DOTI workforce. Work will be completed in accordance with the City’s voluntary compliance of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and City and County of Denver Executive Order 65 (Operational Safety and Health Program).
  • Utilize scientific principles to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control workplace conditions that may cause injury; use environmental monitoring and analytical methods to detect the extent of worker exposure; and serve as the technical expert to senior management regarding occupational safety and health issues.
  • Develop long-range and short-term planning initiatives related to occupational health, safety and industrial hygiene programs.
  • Conduct work observations, facility inspections, and audits to evaluate safety-related program performance and develop and implement recommendations for improvement.
  • Develop, modify, and implement policies, standards and procedures that are part of the DOTI Safety Management System such as: Lockout/Tagout/Verify, Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Hazard Communication, Driver Safety and Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Lead the development, implementation and presentation of comprehensive training programs for a wide variety of occupational safety and health risk and exposures, utilizing both in-person and virtual methods.
  • Review inspection reports for jobsites and facilities to ensure that working conditions and methods used by employees and contract personnel follow occupational safety and health standards.
  • Review health and safety concerns encountered during daily operations and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Conduct and review job hazard assessments for a wide variety of public infrastructure related operations.
  • Serve as a member of Safety Committee and lead efforts to implement committee recommendations.
  • Prepare, analyze, and evaluate statistical health and safety data to provide information for trends and solutions to work- related problems.
  • Conduct post-incident reviews and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Perform after-hours duty officer functions on a rotating basis, evaluate emergency and crisis incidents, coordinate agency or department level of response and allocation of resources, and perform operational duties at site of emergency or crisis.

What You’ll Bring
Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Five or more years of occupational safety and health related experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, MS Teams and MS Power BI.
  • Experience in solid waste management operational safety and/or transportation-related operation safety.
  • Passion about the well-being of employees and empowering them to voice their workplace health and safety concerns.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial or Environmental Health and Safety, a physical science, or a related field accepted as support for required minimum certification.
  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional level experience developing and implementing occupational safety and health policies and procedures, applying technological and scientific methods to reducing worker potential exposure to hazardous conditions and environments, and performing accident investigations.
  • Education and Experience Equivalency: A Master's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health or Environmental Health Engineering may substitute for both the required bachelor’s degree and the required certification.
  • License/Certification Requirement (Requires one of the following certifications):
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification issued by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) certification issued by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA)
  • Or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification issued by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing at the time of application.
  • Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
