What you will do

The Maintenance & Facilities Lead is responsible for the safe, reliable, compliant, and efficient operation of all manufacturing assets, utilities, facilities, and infrastructure at the East London manufacturing site. The role leads maintenance, reliability, facilities management, utilities, and engineering compliance, while ensuring the delivery of operational performance, business continuity, cost optimization, and regulatory compliance.
The role serves as the site's technical authority and legally appointed engineering representative, ensuring equipment, facilities, and infrastructure meet all statutory, quality, GMP, and EHS requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering, Maintenance & Reliability

  • Lead all maintenance activities across production, utilities, facilities, and infrastructure.
  • Ensure all manufacturing equipment and process systems are safe, compliant, and fit for purpose.
  • Drive equipment reliability, availability, and overall asset performance.
  • Lead Reactive, Preventive, and Proactive Maintenance programs.
  • Implement and sustain best practices aligned to the Maintenance Excellence (ME2) framework.
  • Develop and execute maintenance strategies that support production and business objectives.
  • Lead root cause analysis for significant breakdowns, quality incidents, utility interruptions, and equipment failures.
  • Drive continuous improvement and asset optimization initiatives.
  • Ensure maintenance schedules, asset registers, and maintenance plans are accurate and current.
  • Drive equipment lifecycle management and replacement planning.

Facilities & Infrastructure Management

  • Lead all facilities management activities across manufacturing and non-manufacturing areas.
  • Manage facilities maintenance operations, infrastructure management, workplace services, and employee support services.
  • Ensure facilities are maintained in a safe, compliant, efficient, and cost-effective condition.
  • Implement business continuity plans and infrastructure management programs.
  • Coordinate inspections, audits, and site assessments.
  • Serve as the primary facilities contact for site leadership and business stakeholders.

Utilities Management
Accountable for operational reliability and statutory compliance of:

  • Electrical distribution systems
  • Boilers and steam generation
  • Compressed air systems
  • HVAC systems
  • Refrigeration systems
  • Water treatment systems
  • Wastewater treatment systems
  • Emergency power systems
  • Site utilities infrastructure

Drive energy efficiency, water conservation, sustainability initiatives, and utility cost optimization.
Compliance & Governance

  • Appointed as the site's GMR 2.1 responsible person.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable statutory engineering regulations.
  • Ensure adherence to GMP, GEP, Quality, EHS, Corporate Engineering, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Lead machine safety, process safety, LOTO, permit-to-work, and contractor safety programs.
  • Maintain readiness for internal and external audits.
  • Manage engineering and facilities compliance documentation and records.

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage maintenance, facilities, and utilities budgets.
  • Control maintenance expenditure and facilities operating costs.
  • Identify and deliver cost-saving initiatives and productivity improvements.
  • Support capital investment planning and financial justification of projects.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead Maintenance Technicians, Artisans, Utilities personnel, and Facilities teams.
  • Build technical capability and succession pipelines.
  • Establish clear performance objectives and accountability.
  • Coach and develop team members.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, collaboration, and compliance.

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc / BEng Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering

OR

  • BTech / Higher National Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Government Certificate of Competency (Factories)

Preferred

  • Professional Engineering Registration
  • Project Management qualification
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma certification

Experience
Essential

  • 8+ years of engineering, maintenance, facilities, or utilities experience within a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical teams.
  • Experience in asset reliability and maintenance management.
  • Experience managing facilities and infrastructure operations.
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Experience with CMMS systems (Maximo or equivalent).
  • Budget and financial management experience.

Preferred

  • FMCG, Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, or Consumer Manufacturing experience.
  • Experience managing outsourced facilities management providers.
  • Experience as a GMR appointee or GCC holder.
