ENTRY LEVEL SALARY: $42,588 (Pay grade 308)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Property Unit Manager, the purpose of the position is to process and properly store recovered, found, and evidential property for the Police Department. Keeps and maintains records on evidence and property for chain-of-custody documentation from point of entry to disposal. Will assist the Property Custodian in reviewing court case records and removing evidence no longer needed for prosecution or appeals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ensures all property/evidence is accurately documented and properly handled, including verifying that items are packaged, labeled (biohazard, etc.), sealed, and stored in accordance with established procedures.
Stores, or assists in storage of, the property/evidence into the designated secured storage room.
Maintains continued security of all property in the custody of the Knoxville Police Department.
Prepares documentation regarding property/evidence disposition.
Receives, labels and maintains inventory of fixed assets.
Maintains and special orders necessary supplies.
Responsible for securing the Property Management Unit storage areas at the end of each workday.
Assists in the disposal of all confiscated property/evidence according to departmental policy and procedure.
Checks and removes all property/evidence from the temporary property/evidence storage containers located in the property/evidence processing area.
Transfers property/evidence report information into computer system and evidence logbooks.
Prepares, processes and maintains a variety of forms, records or other required documentation.
Schedules appointments to release property/evidence as necessary for court, returned to owner, etc.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Performs routine cleaning of Property Management Unit storage area.
Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, the public, etc.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing ideas and information to individuals of diverse backgrounds in a clear, concise, and courteous manner.
Ability to maintain logically ordered, organized, and accurate records and documentation.
Knowledge of proper procedures to maintain the chain of possession of evidence.
Knowledge of crime scene preservation; property and evidence control; in-service and specialized training attendance.
Knowledge of the basic principles and procedures of data entry and retrieval.
Demonstrated skill in preparing written reports and projects.
Demonstrated skill in the operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.
Ability to function effectively under pressure and meet established deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and thoroughness of records.
General knowledge of spreadsheet applications.
Ability to organize, stock, and replenish office supplies/merchandise.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position consists of primarily medium work, requiring the incumbent to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20 pounds (or less) of force frequently, in order to lift/carry, push/pull, or otherwise move objects. This position uses some training and/or experience to select from a limited number of solutions the most appropriate actions or procedures in performing the job. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent.

Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver's License.
- Minimum of one year of experience as an Evidence Technician, Property Technician, or similar position with a Law Enforcement Agency.
OR
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in law enforcement, clerical or forensics.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference may be given to applicants with an Associate’s degree or college level coursework in law enforcement or forensics related fields.
HYBRID WORK ELIGIBILITY
This position is ineligible for hybrid work.

Drug testing may be required.
