About the Role

The Research Associate at Flowchem plays a vital role in supporting research and development activities related to drug reducing agents (DRA) and specialty chemical products. This position is responsible for conducting laboratory experiments, analyzing data, maintaining accurate records, and supporting the scale-up of new and improved formulations. The Research Associate collaborates with scientists and engineers to develop innovative solutions aligned with Flowchem’s technical and commercial objectives.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct laboratory experiments to develop and evaluate new formulations and process conditions related to DRAs and related chemical technologies.
• Operate and maintain lab equipment including mixers, viscometers, rheometers, FTIR, balances, and analytical instruments.
• Prepare test samples and carry out performance testing, including data collection, analysis, and reporting of results.
• Assist in scale-up trials by preparing pilot batches and supporting process transfer to manufacturing.
• Maintain accurate and organized laboratory notebooks and electronic records in compliance with internal quality and documentation standards.
• Participate in troubleshooting product and process issues by supporting root cause investigations and providing technical insight.
• Collaborate with R&D, Quality, and Operations teams to share findings and contribute to technical project development.
• Support raw material qualification efforts, supplier evaluations, and compatibility studies.
• Adhere to all lab safety protocols and environmental procedures; ensure proper chemical handling and disposal.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management that fall within the general scope of this position.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field is required.

Experience

• 2–4 years of hands-on laboratory experience in the chemical, polymer, or petrochemical industry.
• Experience with chemical formulation, material testing, and analytical instrumentation is highly preferred.
• Prior experience supporting scale-up or pilot production activities is a plus.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

• HAZMAT, OSHA laboratory safety training, or similar industry-recognized certifications are preferred.

Skills and Abilities / Core Proficiencies

• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for managing data, documentation, and sample preparation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional technical team.
• Familiarity with scientific principles related to chemistry, polymers, and fluid dynamics.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis tools; prior exposure to ERP or lab management systems is a plus.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for summarizing technical findings.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
• Adherence to lab safety practices and compliance standards.
• Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and willingness to learn new technologies and methods.

Physical Requirements
This position requires regular standing, walking, and performing tasks at laboratory benches. The employee must be able to lift and carry materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Manual dexterity is required for operating laboratory instruments and handling chemical samples. Visual acuity is necessary for reading instruments, labels, and documentation. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including lab coats, gloves, goggles, and face shields, is required during lab activities.
Work Conditions
Work is primarily performed in a laboratory environment with occasional visits to pilot plant or production areas. The lab is climate-controlled, but work may involve handling volatile chemicals or interacting with hot or pressurized systems. Some exposure to fumes, odors, and noise may occur. All activities are conducted under established EH&S protocols.
