Development Scientist (Regulated & Applied Development) - 12-month Fixed-Term Contract

About the Role

Oxford Nanopore is seeking a Development Scientist to join our Regulated & Applied Development team. This team is responsible for the development, verification, validation, and lifecycle management of sequencing platforms and workflows operating within regulated quality environments.
In this role, you will lead complex scientific investigations, design and execute verification studies, and support the development of innovative sequencing products and applications. You'll work closely with multidisciplinary teams including Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, Production, and Product Development to ensure products meet the highest scientific and regulatory standards.
What You'll Be Doing

• Design, execute and interpret complex experimental and verification studies.
• Lead technical workstreams and contribute to cross-functional project teams.
• Support regulated product development, verification and product release activities.
• Author and review scientific and regulatory documentation.
• Identify and manage technical risks, driving effective mitigation strategies.
• Collaborate with QA, Regulatory Affairs and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with quality standards.
• Analyse complex datasets and translate findings into clear scientific recommendations.
• Mentor and support the development of junior team members.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of quality systems, processes and verification approaches.

What We're Looking For

• Degree in a biological, chemical, physical science or a related discipline.
• Significant experience in assay development, experimental design or regulated product development.
• Experience working within ISO 9001, ISO 13485 or similar regulated environments.
• Strong scientific problem-solving and data analysis skills.
• Experience writing and reviewing technical or regulatory documentation.
• Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Nice to Have

• MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific field.
• Experience supporting regulatory submissions (EU, UK or FDA).
• Knowledge of risk management methodologies such as DFMEA or PRA.
• Previous experience mentoring or coaching colleagues.
