An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Safety Centre within the Civil Large Safety and Reliability (S&R) Team, who play a central role influencing Red Top and SAR strategies, conducting numerical risk assessments, and performing safety analysis for in-service products and new product designs.

The Safety Centre is the Centre of Excellence for product safety in the Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace Business, ensuring our products are safe by design and addressing safety concerns throughout the product lifecycle.

As a Safety and Reliability Engineer, you will play a key role in assuring the safety of our Civil Aerospace products, applying analytical and numerical techniques alongside engineering judgement to influence product safety decisions. Working at the interface between the Safety Centre, Value Streams, Engineering for Services and Design, you will assess the safety and reliability attributes of our products, ensuring these are understood and the risks arising from them are managed to an acceptable level.

You will also have opportunities to contribute to future programmes, influencing the safety of future product architectures, designs and emerging technologies (e.g. UltraFan) through safety-driven engineering. Working closely with the Design Safety Function and other cross-functional stakeholders, you will also help shape the evolution of safety and reliability methods, tools and capability, while developing your own technical leadership and stakeholder management skills.

What you will be doing

Perform safety assessments of propulsion systems using techniques such as Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Event Tree Analysis (ETA) and Numerical Risk Assessment (NRA).
Apply probabilistic, statistical and engineering analysis to understand product safety risks across both in-service products and new product developments.
Analyse and quantify risks associated with human and system interactions, including Human Reliability Assessment, to support robust engineering decisions.
Investigate safety-related events and component failures, supporting root cause analysis and ensuring lessons learned are captured to improve future product designs.
Develop safety arguments and safety cases that support product certification and safe operation across the product lifecycle.
Influence engineering decisions by working collaboratively with the wider Safety Centre and Chief Engineer leadership teams for in-service and NPI products.
Support the implementation of the Safety Management System, including participation in Product Safety Review Boards and other product safety governance activities.
Work with the Design Safety Function and wider Safety Centre to improve Safety and Reliability methods, tools and ways of working, driving engineering efficiency and consistency across Civil.
Contribute to the development of future programmes, demonstrators and emerging technologies by influencing product architectures and safety-driven design.
Drive continuous improvement by embracing digital technologies, AI and innovative ways of working, to enhance product safety engineering productivity.

Position Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a STEM subject and with experience in a relevant engineering environment (Mechanical, Aeronautical, etc).
Familiarity with the design, operation and environment of gas turbine engines.
Strong engineering judgement and analytical skills.
A proven track record of delivering high-quality technical work in a cross-functional engineering environment.
Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines and other internal and external stakeholder groups.
Ability to manage ambiguity and make informed engineering decisions in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and comfortable working with engineering data, performing analysis, and presenting technical information.

Preferred Requirements

Knowledge or experience of Safety and Reliability engineering techniques (e.g. FMECA, Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis, Numerical Risk Assessment) would be advantageous but is not essential.
