Animal Care Technician

• Key Points- this is not a job for everyone
• Handling mice and rats that are genetically bred for medical testing
• They will be cleaning cages, feeding etc.
• This is a sterile environment- candidates must take a shower and change into sterile clothes (provided) each day. Cannot leave for lunch or breaks. Food is provided.

Responsibilities

• Provide food, water, and clean housing to animals according to a rigid schedule
• Maintain detailed records of animal production and inventory in precisely weighed and aged groups
• Inject or medicate animals as instructed
• Prepare for shipment
• Work within changing shift times and rotating overtime schedule
• Review integrity of the isolator unit and maintenance
• Maintain work area in an organized, aseptic, and safe condition
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Able to handle laboratory animals and recognize abnormalities
• Commitment to provide the highest quality care for laboratory animals and their offspring
• Ability to perform repetitive tasks quickly and efficiently
• Accurately calculate and record numbers
• Good teamwork skills
• Able to work in a confined environment
• Work in a standing position that will require bending and stretching of arms and legs throughout regular work shift
• Lift and move objects regularly throughout shift.
• Avoid contact with rodent species outside of work
