Project Engineer

Base salary Birmingham: £41,092 pa to £48,344 pa depending on skills and experience.

Base salary London: £44,380 pa to £52,212 pa depending on skills and experience

Deliver cost-effective and safe design solutions that comply with project and statutory requirements, supporting the Senior Project Engineer. Review and assess technical submissions from Professional Service Consultants (PSCs), determining compliance with standards and requirements. Engage with stakeholders and internal subject matter experts to provide scheme updates and to help inform the design.

About the Role

• Participate in productivity management and improvement activities both internally and with supply chain partners to develop and achieve productivity targets.
• Manage the delivery of safe and affordable design solutions that meet requirements, are developed in accordance with the CDM Regulations and ensure value for money at each stage of development.
• Support the Senior Project Engineer in managing the design programme, ensuring that deliverables are submitted to programme and informing the Senior Project Engineer of any emerging issues and opportunities.
• Support consultants, drawing on internal expertise, to inform and deliver design work that complies with requirements.
• Ensure design risks are fully considered and communicated within the design process.
• Review technical submissions and assure compliance evidence against delivery and design requirements.
• Attend public consultation and stakeholder forums, working with local communities in identifying priorities.
• Support the Senior Project Engineer in liaising with external stakeholders.
• Identify, develop and present Value Engineering opportunities and design recommendations to the Senior Project Engineer and appropriate internal forums.
• Support environment colleagues in developing the environmental design and assessment.
• Support the development of consent documentation and provide engineering support during the consenting process.
• Support a collaborative culture which enables high performance by encouraging innovation and knowledge sharing.
• Promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in your work and support and comply with all organisational EDI initiatives, policies and procedures.

About You

Skills

• Ability to carry out independent checks on a wide variety of designs and interpret and assess specifications, standards and technical reports.
• Planning and organisational skills, delivering under pressure, meeting tight deadlines whilst gathering input from other functions.
• Ability to work in a team with effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to resolve complex design problems whilst maintaining attention to detail.
• Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with multidisciplinary stakeholders, demonstrating strong influencing skills.
• Ability to communicate complex issues clearly, engage and influence a variety of external stakeholders at public forums.

Knowledge

• Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
• Achieved or working towards professional membership.
• Application of engineering design principles to achieve optimal design outputs.
• Applicable UK construction regulations including CDM Regulations.
• Commercial awareness including understanding of cost, schedule and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements.
• Awareness of the Common Safety Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment is desirable.

Type of Experience

• Project experience of design and engineering, ranging from feasibility to detail design, working on a large, complex infrastructure schemes.
• Project experience engaging with stakeholders and the local community.
• Experience of design consultant technical management.
