Job Description

TheMedical Laboratory Technologist-Microbiologyis responsible forthe efficient operation, analysis, and reporting of tests performed in the lab. Plate reading using standard methods for microbial isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing. Therolewill perform all required maintenance, QC, and equipment calibration as necessary tooperatethe lab.

PrimaryDuties &Responsibilities

-

Performs all microbiology dutiesin accordance withestablished procedures and policies.

-

Plates,isolates,andidentifiesbacterial and other microorganisms present in body fluids and rectal swabs onappropriate media.

Processesisolateson automated identification and sensitivity equipment, as necessary.

-

Verifies, records,and reports result in LISin a timely manner.

-

Has in-depth conceptual and practical knowledgeofmicrobiology and basic knowledge of related disciplines.

-

May lead projects or project steps within a broader project or may have accountability for ongoing activities orobjectives. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.

Perform equipment and instrument maintenance according tomanufacturerrecommendations andestablishedprotocols.

-

Follow recommended manufacturers and/ordepartment-definedinstrument performance checks and calibrations prior to testing.

Perform, evaluate,and report QC protocol;identifyand resolve QC failures; document resolutions.

Troubleshoot and resolve basic instrument malfunctions following the aid of instrument manuals or technical service by telephone.

Assist Pathology Lab Manager in resolving problems.

Monitor supply inventories in assigned areas toensureadequate availability; receive and stock supplies.

Perform competency andproficiencychallengesin a timely manner.

Responsible for efficient and cost-effective use of supplies and reagents.

Assists Director in meeting department regulatory agency requirements (CAP, CLIA, etc.).

Maintainsaccuratelogs and records.

Organizes and labels specimens/paperworkand keepsrecords of tests.

Disposesof laboratory waste andchangesolutions appropriately.

Performs other laboratory and office duties as assigned bymanager.

Qualifications

-

BS in Medical Technology preferred; or one of the following

-

BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, or

-

Associatedegree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology or

-

Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493. 1433,published on March 14, 1990.

-

Minimum of one (1) year relevant experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician with Clinical Laboratory experience in a Microbiology Lab required.

-

Requires an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or its equivalent, Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), andwill be verified prior toemployment.

Able toworksome weekends and holidays, as this is a requirement for this role.

Knowledge, Competencies & Skills

-

Current knowledge of acceptable andappropriate clinicalpractice, quality assurance, and patient management and care.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an effectivehealthcare team member, as this role will receive minimal guidance.

Excellent customer service skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Job Type:Full-Time

Pay Range:$35.00 - $41.00 per hour

Actual compensation offered to candidates is based on work experience, education, skill level,and geographic location. Compensation may vary depending on the state or region in which theposition islocated,in accordance withapplicable laws.
