Background/Organizational Context Eastern and Southern Africa (AFE) Region • Home to about 700 million people, the World Bank’s Eastern and Southern Africa Region (AFE) is a geographically, culturally, and an economically diverse region of 26 countries stretching from the Red Sea in the North to the Cape of Good Hope in the South. South Africa, an upper middle-income country, is the Region’s largest economy, followed by Angola, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Seychelles and Mauritius are the Region’s only high-income economies. The Region boasts some of the world’s richest natural resources. While much of Africa’s population lives in rural areas, Eastern and Southern African cities continue to grow. The AFE Region harbors some of Africa’s protracted conflicts, rendering many of its countries fragile, while significant gaps in education, health, and skills development continue to keep people from reaching their full potential. This creates huge development challenges and impacts heavily on the lives and livelihoods of people and hinders regional integration and trade. • These challenges create an opportunity to work closely with country leaders, civil society, development partners, and young people to chart a brighter course for the future, as well as regional economic organizations, which play a strong role in helping countries reach their development potential. East Africa Distributional Impacts of Policies Team • The AFE Distributional Impacts of Policies (DIP) Team, located in the World Bank’s Prosperity Vertical, plays a key role in supporting the World Bank Group’s vision of creating a world free of poverty on a livable planet. We build a robust evidence base on poverty and equity, and support operational solutions, focusing on four thematic lines: (1) data for policy analysis; (2) markets and institutions for poverty reduction and shared prosperity; (3) fiscal and social policy for poverty reduction and shared prosperity; and (4) welfare implications of climate change, fragility and conflict risks. For more information: <https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/poverty> Duties and Accountabilities Description The Consultant will join the Eastern and Southern Africa DIP Team, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He/she will be responsible for supporting the analytical and operational engagements of the Poverty and Equity work program in Ethiopia. Responsibilities will include: • Preparation and analysis of surveys, census, and administrative data • Preparation of data dissemination products, including maps, data portal and inputs to reports • Preparation of written inputs to analytical pieces on poverty, equity and shared prosperity, including background papers, and reports • Collaboration with operational teams, particularly for enhancing monitoring and pro-poor distributional impacts • Contributions to the overall micro-monitoring effort and any poverty-related policy and programmatic interactions with internal and external clients We are looking for an imaginative and innovative research analyst with strong quantitative skills, highly capable to support and undertake analysis in the highlighted areas of focus in Ethiopia.
